DRAG IDOL SEMI FINAL

With a busy scheduleof being an addled, alcoholic crackwhore, I shamefully haven’t had a chance to catch any Drag Idol heats personally this year. We had to rectify this quick smart. Thundering into Camden’s Black Cap, we wasted no time in mincing backstage and grilling the nervous semi-finalists about the upcoming gig that could make or break their cabaret career. Just what you need when you’re ‘centering’ for a show – a mouthy fag rag hack all up in your business. LuLu DeLish told us she was “shitting herself” due to the high calibre of talent out there, whilst we strapped Brighton’s Sandy Crack into her outfit. Yes, we do dressing too!

We also J’adored Morag McDuff’s outfits – a psychadelic melange of Queen Elizabeth, 1950s chic and Mrs Mack from Take The High Road – oh, why must I make these references that age me so? On to the stage, The Oreos have some great chemistry and individual drag names a gwan (Pam O Chocolat, anyone?) but, as judge Jason said, ten minutes of Disney songs does not a 45-minute show make. This reviewier would personally turn into Ursula from The Little Mermaid after just 15 minutes of Disney pap.

Miss Demeanour, the Irish gal representing Wales, with a bit of Spanish senorita and Riverdance thrown in, suitably impressed, as did the divine Alexis Carrington. But our personal favourite had to be Son of a Tutu. Whilst her act isn’t currently quite at the comedy heights we know she’s going to hit very soon,

Ms Tutu is hilarious and knows how to work a room. If homegurl can keep the drunkards on our fair gay scene interested and entertained – which she did – she will easily become a much-loved and respected addition to London’s cabaret rosta. Nuff respect to

Titti La Camp, a bloody expert in her field, who kept the show together wonderfully, and also the constructive criticism from four very experienced judges, Jason Reid, Spike Rhodes, Kevin Cruise and our very own Jules.

Roll on the final, where we’ll see Morag McDuff, Son of a Tutu, Alexis Carrington and Miss Demeanour made it through to the Drag Idol final on Friday 24th June at Two Brewers, Clapham. We’ll see you there!
