ON YOUR MARKS…SET…MINCE!

The only exercise we ever get usually involves chasing down reluctant trade at Chariots Vauxhall, but London’s LGBT track and field stars were out in force for an action-packed GMFA/RVT Gay Sports Day fundraiser over the bank holiday weekend.

Drawing in competing teams from far and wide, a carnival atmosphere prevailed as the likes of the apron-clad Dinner Ladies took on the bewigged Flying Finger Nails, and the hunksome Bear Patrol boys went head-to-head with the superheroine Superlezhogs in a fun-filled line up of events.

With a packed itinerary taking in a range of camp sporting activities from the handbag toss to the sack race, our ‘action-replay’ highlights included a (false) nail-biting space-hopper steeplechase, fiercely contested tug ‘o’ war (just imagine the rope’s a Prada clutch at the Harvey Nick’s sale, luvs) and limp-wristed 50-metre mince (if only we’d known – we’d have left the field standing).

We were, however, disappointed to observe the almost universal disregard for the rules in the egg and spoon race, but heartened that compere and commentator, a resplendent Timberlina, instantly disqualified all but the last contestant to cross the line – the only person not cheating, tsk tsk.

Meanwhile, our fave costumes were those sported by the Nippon Sushi team, dressed as, you guessed it, walking, talking (and bitching) sushi. And after all that activity on our part – well it takes some effort to squint over to the race track from the safety of the beer-tent – we can only extend our congratulations to all those who took part for raising some much-needed cash for a good cause.

Competition was indeed very fierce on the day, with ‘The Misfits’ crowned winners of the sporting events. ‘The Flying Fingernails’ were the top fundraisers, thanks to their amazing efforts to bring in over £1,900 from sponsorship, while ‘Flob-a-Dobs’ won best costume for their Flower-inspired outfits.

We’re already looking forward to 2012!
