BE PART OF G-A-Y HISTORY!

2 minutes of your time + knowing your status = £10 for charity.
G-A-Y and 56 Dean Street have teamed up to set a Guinness World Record for administering the most HIV tests in 8-hours at G-A-Y Bar in Old Compton Street in Soho, on World AIDS Day on 1st December 2011. How can you be part of gay history and also help to raise thousands of £££ for charity? Simple…

• Have a HIV test at G-A-Y Bar on World AIDS Day 1st December, from 2-10pm.

• Leading Soho clinic 56 Dean Street staff will be providing discrete testing and expert support services at one of the nine HIV testing stations throughout the venue.

• To get tested, you can simply turn up on the day, however, to help things progress quicker, fill out a form in advance – available from G-A-Y Bar and also see page 8 of this weeks magazine.

• For every person tested, G-A-Y will donate £10 to the Elton John AIDS Foundation!

G-A-Y owner

“We offer HIV testing every Wednesday in the basement bar. The idea of doing this is to normalise getting an HIV test and take the stigma away from it. A few years ago it took over a week to get your results back. Now it takes two minutes. Getting tested should be as natural and regular as going to the dentist, or going to your local gay bar and having a drink.

“It’s important to get tested because knowing your status can save your life. If you find out you are positive, through 56 Dean Street, they can monitor your health and give you the best treatment. Also, if you have been stupid enough to have unsafe sex and you get a negative result, you can wipe the slate clean and start again, using protection.

“And if you give us two minutes of your time for an HIV test, we will give £10 to the Elton John AIDS Foundation. If 1,000 people get tested, that’s £10,000 for charity.”

“Getting tested should be as natural and regular as going to the dentist.”

Lead Clinician, 56 Dean Street

“Do you know what the most common reason is that people in the UK die from HIV? It’s because they test too late to get the full benefit of HIV treatment. Those who start modern HIV treatments at the correct time can expect to live a near normal life span. So I find it shocking that in 2011 gay men are still dying unnecessarily of AIDS.

“It’s recommended that all sexually active gay men should have an HIV test every 12 months. However, studies show less than half of them tested last year. That’s why 56 Dean Street felt it was so important to be a part of the HIV testing world record attempt at G-A-Y on December 1st. We want every gay man to know how important annual HIV testing is. We’re transferring our clinic into the basement and ground floor of G-A-Y Bar from 2-10pm.

“We’ll be running the same quality service as our daily walk in HIV testing clinic. There will be nine testing stations staffed by our expert teams, so there’ll be no rush. The health bus will be parked outside providing information and advice. While back at the clinic our specialist counsellors will be on call for support if needed.”
