CINFULLY DELICIOUS

Mzz Kimberley Fairy Tales

If you’re anything like us, your Sunday afternoons usually consist of watching ‘Murder, She Wrote’ repeats whilst fingering through trashy mags, wondering whether your Sambuca riddled body will ever accept solids again.

Well, Sundays at the Cambria could be just the tonic for you. It is fast becoming one of THE places for cabaret, with weekly shows from Mzz Kimberley and guests in a beautiful and relaxing setting. We sent our very own Sunday Girl Jason Reid for a chat with the lady herself, and to three of the stars who will be joining her in the Cambria panto, ‘Fairy Tales’.

Mzz Kimberley – Cinderfella

Fairy Tales You play Cinderfella in the panto. Tell me a bit about her character.

She’s a sad old tranny who is reborn into a glamour puss, marrying her female to male transsexual prince, living happily ever after in Brixton, in a nutshell.

It’s a really varied cast. How do you think you will all work together?

Bringing different scenes together is something I’ve done since the Powder Room [Miss Kimberley’s well-respected solo show]. It works very well, as it gives us a chance to explore different avenues, learn about each other and respect each other. Also because of the varied cast, there will be something for everyone to enjoy.

You’re Sunday afternoons at the Cambria have really taken off. You must be so proud…

I’m extremely proud and loving every minute. And I want to thank all our amazing acts and fantastic customers who have supported the Cambria. Owners, Steve and Aimi make everyone feel welcome and special by taking time to get to know them. The Cambria is truly a hidden treasure.

Ruby Venezuela – The Fairy Queen

You wrote the script for Fairy Tales. Can you tell me about the story, briefly?Fairy Tales

It is a send up of feelings and fun, to songs, and every song counts in the story. Use your imagination and come along, as life IS a pantomime, darling.

You’re known for your creative and extravagant costumes. Will the wardrobe of this show reflect that?

The costumes in the show are astounding and there is TONS of glitter. They could all easily end up as ‘baby Ruby’s’.

You have been involved in many pantos over the years. Any favourites?

It’s funny, my last big panto production was Cinderella in Guilford twenty years ago, with Ceri Dupree as my sister, Bill Maynard as the Baron, Don McLean as Buttons and Anne Shelton as the Fairy Godmother. It was ridiculously camp!

Who do you think makes the perfect panto dame?

Panto dames go back hundreds of years, to Shakespeare’s day when men played woman in farcical roles. Danny La Rue was a great dame, and nowadays Ceri Dupree and Biggins make superb dames.

A Man to Pet – Ugly Sister

For people that have not seen you, how would you sum up your act?

Weird, trashy, sexy and political, all in a very alternative way.

You’re playing one of the ugly sisters, alongside Son Ofa Tutu, how do you think you will compliment each other?

I just met Son Ofa Tutu, recently and we connected straight away. We are sisters that love to hate Cinderfella and we are not ugly. Wait ‘til you see how sexy we both look [laughs].

Fab, so will you be bringing lashings of festive glamour to the show then?

What do you mean, dear? Of course! Glamour is one of my specialties… yeah, right!

Son Ofa Tutu – Ugly Sister

Are you looking forward to ‘Fairy Tales’ and is it your first foray into panto-land?

It was an honour to have been asked to join the cast with Mzz Kimberley and the rest of the gang. It is my first panto and I hope not my last, as I love the experience.

You have guested at the Cambria before; what do you like about performing there?

The Cambria is simply sumptuous. Miss Tutu has tried walking away with one of the chandeliers before, but they won’t fit into her ‘Ghana must go’ bag. The clientele is amazing and the food is to die for.

How has your ‘journey’ been since winning Drag Idol back in June, this year?

Drag Idol is the most important thing that has happened to me since birth, as it marked my re-birth as a performer, opening so many doors and learning opportunities for me.

• Don’t miss ‘Fairy Tales’ at the Cambria (40 Kemerton Road, Camberwell SE5 9AR) on 27th November and 4th, 11th and 18th December.
