WEEKEND (18)

Shot guerrilla-style in Nottingham, this astute gay drama is one of the best films of the year, and one the strongest-ever depictions of gay relationships.

After Russell (Tom Cullen) meets Glen (Chris New) in a nightclub, their one-night stand extends over a weekend of alcohol, drugs, parties and sex as they struggle with how quickly they’ve developed feelings for each other.

Director Andrew Haigh (Greek Pete) stays intimately close to the characters, so the film feels a bit like Before Sunrise or Once, with snappy humour, moving drama and realistic sex. A beautifully made, must-see film packed with telling observations. 10/10
