FANCY A MIDWEEK K SESH?

Get set for a an extra shot of midweek fabulousness in London’s glittering West End, as flawless, transsexual performer/host Mzz Kimberley struts into profile with her brand new show. Jason Reid and Lee Dalloway perfected their catwalk totters, slung on a fresh boa and caught up with Mzz K and a couple of her special guests…

MZZ KIMBERLEY

JASON: What can we expect from your new Wednesday night Soho residency, Mzz Kimberley?

MZZ K: The theme is a risky burlesque cabaret with a twist. It really will have something for everyone. There will be jazz, blues, soul and a bit of rock’n’roll thrown in for good measure.

What kind of vibe will you be creating?

I’ll be taking it back to old school. It’s reminiscent of the 1930s, ‘The Big Easy’, but in today’s times.

You’ve some great guests lined up. Tell us about them…

Johnny Woo will be joining me next week along with ‘A Man To Pet’, with his full on act. I’ve worked with them both many times and they’re really good fun to be with. I always try to pick performers who have life and soul to them.

What’s the key to a good new cabaret venue in your opinion?

Any venue that facilitates the feeling of intimacy between a performer and their audience. Its nice to feel close to people and feel you can reach out and touch them. Some performers prefer their little ivory towers but me and my team like to get up close and personal. It’s more real that way. Somewhere that’s cosy and has a well stocked bar always helps!

Gotta love that fully stocked bar! Do you have any memorable, or stand-out, moments that have happened during any of your shows?

The actress Goldie Hawn once got up and boogied with me; that girl can get down! Kurt Russell must have a hard time keeping up with her!

On to a more serious topic; transphobia. Sadly there is still a great deal of it about. What would you say to those who suffer from such discrimination?

I would say never let anyone bring you down and never let anyone stop you from being the person you really are. Bigotry is so last century. Some people are so unhappy with themselves that they decide to take it out on others, that’s the saddest part. I don’t know if that’s ignorance or a lack of love.

A MAN TO PET

JASON: What treats do you have in store for your guest spot with Mzz Kimberley?

AMTP: I have many treats in store. Most of which will be visually sensational ones.

You’ve guested with Mzz Kimberley a few times before. What do you like about working with her?

I don’t just like working with Mzz Kimberley, I love it! We have so much in common and we are constantly laughing when we work together.

What do you like to think audiences take away from your show?

My energy.

Do you prefer a quiet, attentive audience or a loud and up for it rabble?

I like an audience to be quiet and attentive initially, but then when the energy of my performance takes over the audience should reflect that energy. There’s nothing worse than a boring audience.

JONNY WOO

LEE: It’s been a while since we spoke to you, what have you been up to?
JONNY: New shows, darling! Am preparing a new show for Bistrotheque’s cabaret re-launch in the summer – ‘Jonny Woo’s Guide To East London’ and embarking on a more serious adaptation of a book for the stage. Gay Bingo continues a very cosy residency at Soho Theatre and I have another Jonny Woo Show coming up at The ICA in the spring, with new bands and my new silly project The Mary Portas Experience!

Wow, busy gurl! What can we expect from your performance during Mzz K’s show?
I think I am going to have a bit of a sing-a-long and preview some new stuff from the Bistrotheque show, complete with spoon playing and – don’t hate me – my ukulele!

How did you and Mzz Kimberley first meet?

At Gay Pride some years back. She was on roller skates and I was practically naked with a long floor length wig on! I love her nights and that she is bringing old and new school together.

You’ve shared the stage/club floor with a number of bonkers and bewigged – who’s the craziest drag diva you’ve ever worked with?
They’re all mad! Too much acrylic on the head and on the nails! Jeanette is off her trolly, Ma Butcher is more than a handful, and there was always drama with Russella. Give a tranny a drink ticket and you know it will end in tears… 3 days later!

• The Mzz Kimberley Show is at Profile (84-86 Wardour Street, Soho, W1F 0TQ) every Wednesday from 7:30pm-10:30pm.
