THESE BOYS GOT PRIDE

Two hot new musicians for the price of one! Ahead of their performances in Trafalgar Square for Pride London, Lee Dalloway chats to Adam Tyler and Ray Isaac.

ADAM TYLER

For our readers who don’t know you, how would you sum up your sound in one sentence?
My music is emotional electronic pop you can dance to, with a heavy use of synths, catchy melodies, and relatable lyrics.

Tell us about your musical influences both past and present… who gets your eardrums tingling?
I always have music playing wherever I go, but some of my favorite artists and influences are Nine Inch Nails, Madonna, Depeche Mode, September, Hurts, Ace of Base, Databoy, Robyn, Siobhan Donaghy, Tiesto, and Morgan Page.

We love your single ‘Like a Drug’ – what are your addictions?
Some of the things I’m addicted to are smoothies, popsicles, hiking, and corn. I have quite the sweet tooth so anything with sugar. I’d say my biggest personal drug of all is music.

Tell us about your debut album ‘Shattered Ice’, what can we expect from it?
It’s a collection of pop, electronic, and dance music. The themes on the album range from love to hate to music to life in general. It’s full of melodies that’ll get stuck in your head instantly and it’s great for dancing to or working out. A lot of my friends have told me it’s perfect for the gym!

Your video for ‘Like a Drug’ is rather sexual, but also quite sexually ambiguous, are you just teasing us, sir?
Guilty! I love teasing people and having double meanings to my songs and videos just to get people thinking. It’s fun for me! ‘Like A Drug’ is definitely my favorite video that I’ve done and was so much fun to shoot!

Are you excited about playing Pride London? What can we expect from your performance?
I’m extremely excited to play Pride London! I love London and to perform there at such a notable gig and venue is an honour! You can expect a party from my performance! I’ll be performing some original songs and might throw in some surprises, too.

RAY ISAAC

How would you describe your sound in one sentence?
My brand of edgy pop/dance music sounds like droppin’ a shot of Justin Timberlake into a David Guetta Jaggerbomb. A rollercoaster ride of emotions!

Who would you say are your musical influences and why?
Since I was a teenager my two music idols have been Madonna and Brian McKnight. Madonna because of artistic integrity and branding, her catchy songs and the fact she has no inhibitions. Brian McKnight because of his angelic voice and soothing song writing. His music was the soundtrack in my life when my cousin died from cancer. That was also the first time I realized I could sing and I performed at my cousins funeral. That was my first ever performance when I was a teenager.

We’re enjoying your single ‘U Want Or U Don’t’ – have you been the victim of indecisive love interests? Was this the inspiration for the song?
Believe it or not I wrote this about a love interest who I would see day in and day out in the club. I was invisible in Australia until I released my track through Ministry of Sound. Suddenly I became centre of attention and people gathered around me, including the love interest. I soon realized that pretentiousness is not who I am, so I wrote this song. It wrote it to voice my opinion about the scene in general. People are just too afraid to approach someone unless they have their safety net of pretentious friends. This track says, “I know your afraid but please show me your deep side and tell me straight out do you want me or you don’t want me? Or are you just talking to me because I’m a pop star?!”

Do you find it tougher being an independent singer/songwriter in terms of getting exposure or do you prefer the freedom to completely drive your own career?
I have never been signed to a major label, however, I hear rumours and see evidence of how much pressure and control is lost. Saying that, if a major label like my dream goal Universal UK sees my potential to make them rich, then I’m willing to sacrifice my control if it means I can inspire and save a fans broken heart somewhere in the world.

Who would you most like to collaborate with in the music industry?
I have a few. Number one is Madonna, Adele, David Guetta and Adam Lambert, because they are honest people who want to make a change in the world. I also believe they are not sell-outs. I also want to write songs for other artists; Max Martin and Steve Mac are on my goal board.

What are you most looking forward to about performing at Pride?
Feeling the rush of the proud energy of the audience and I am honoured to be playing for such a supportive community.
