DICK!

So the church bells peeled and ushered in the start of ‘DICK!’, this year’s festive panto at the Leicester Square Theatre. Writer Stuart Saint, maybe saint by name but not by nature, as his script was full of the most scintillating and salacious sexual innuendo. The jokes came fast and furious, pure and utter filth that had the eager audience howling.

The excellent cast deliver a frantic version of a well-rounded script, proving they were all consummate pros with everyone serving up some very polished performances. A huge hurrah has to be awarded to Miss Dusty O, playing the very formidable Sonfonda Cox, with a facial grimace (and a wardrobe!) that puts other panto dames to shame. Her one-liners were superb, A tour de force debut performance in a role that suited her right down to her sequined socks and shoes.

Act two opens with an ensemble song and dance number called, ‘All at Sea’, which clearly had the show set on the right course. The pace remained vibrant, powered by strong voices and top slapstick, incorporating Benny Hill chase music, a pastiche of the ‘Chariots of Fire’ slow motion running and a hysterical send up of Charlie’s Angels, with even some time for a gangsta rapping Fairy.

This is adult pantomine of a high quality, thigh-slapping level, with the show unburdened by a smaller stage. In fact, the small size of the stage and its proximity to the audience gave the panto a charm and warmth that fueled some wonderful audience participation.

Go and get yourself a great, delicious dollop of Christmas Dick, a tantalizing tinsel-covered treat.
