I’M SO EXCITED!

The new Pedro Almodóvar film gets us a bit excited

After the huge success of psychological ‘horror film without screams’ The Skin I Live In, spectacular Spanish film director Pedro Almodóvar turns to screwball comedy with this zany, vibrant romp set upon an airplane.

Three gay alcoholic air stewards provide acerbic narrative to the story, thankfully rising above tired cliché, as they battle with a crazy mix of business class passengers, including a psychic, a dominatrix and a drugs mule with an invaluable supply of mescs up his ass. Plus one of the stewards is in a twisted affair with the bisexual married pilot and the entirety of economy class has been drugged to unconsciousness since a problem with the landing gear means that the plane is most probably doomed.

Almodóvar’s signature colourful style works well with a comedy and provides a richness and texture to the film, that it might otherwise lack in emotional depth. He is renowned for picking superb actors and this film is no exception with the cast’s delivery often elevating lines that might have fallen flat in lesser hands.

As you may have guessed from the plot synopsis, a lot of the script is a little silly but this is not a film that sets out to take itself seriously and glories in its silliness rather than pitfalling into it. There were many laugh out loud moments and if you like involving, fun comedies, with a fair exploration of modern gay and straight sexual mores, then I’m So Excited! should definitely be on your list of upcoming cinema outings.
