PARTY MONSTER

Super Electric Party Machine is the weekly Friday night throw down from NYC legend Larry Tee and his resident co-conspirator AttackAttackAttack. Cliff Joannou got on the ol’ blower and had a chat with Larry ahead of its second birthday this weekend…

Wow. Two years of SEPM! How does the night separate itself from other East Bloc nights?

When Anthony and I throw a party, we try to add all the ingredients that we want to see in a party. We live for crazy personalities that make us scream, like nu-gen club superstar Glyn Famous, undercover designer/mess Jacqui Potato, or La Rara – our Gaga impersonator. We want kick-ass DJs that play hot new music like Jodie Harsh, Kris Di Angelis and Tom Stephen and ourselves. But we want to hear the pop song of the moment, too, so we play pop in our sexy backroom. We often get London top designers to do a special DJ set for us like Basso and Brooke. And I often get on the mic and call everyone ‘bitches’, because they are ‘bitches’ and they love it. We really just want to have the sexiest, craziest party in London where people can find other hot, young, smart boys and get laid.

Sounds like a winning formula to us. What have been the biggest highlights of the past two years? We want salacious, scandalous and sexy stories!

Scandalous moments? Last week we did a nude photo shoot for Pornceptual in one of the private back rooms and the photos of several of the stars of the shoot couldn’t be included because they were too famous or too ‘straight’. [Laughs] Or what about the time we thought rapper Brooke Candy was going to hump ‘I Love It’ singer Charli XCX after their performance together? Or who would’ve thought that Sharon Needles would have to fight off boys when she came down out of drag while juggling a Drag Race boyfriend back home who wouldn’t have approved of what she did when she was at our club. We try to be good, but every once in a while a cock or two gets loose!

What can we look forward to on the birthday?

Our birthday has a live performance of ‘Applause’ from La Rara, our Gaga impersonator as well as a song from Glyn Famous of Sink the Pink. One of our fave DJs, D Ramirez, who had the #1 smash ‘Yeah Yeah’ is going to do a DJ set for us with Salvador Darling playing trash in the back room. Oh, and did we mention the porn star that’s going to jump out of our birthday cake?

“We try to be good, but every once in a while a cock or two gets loose!”

How did you get Anthony [aka AttackAttackAttack] involved in the night?

When I met Anthony, I just thought he was young and hot, but I quickly found out he was the best un-discovered DJ in London. Plus, we co-produce a lot of the music on our label with artists like Nwando (our Kelis/Azaelia), Lady Cartel (our Brooke/Iggy), the rap duo Serious Thugs and Portia Ferrari (our Rihanna/Rita Ora). We thought the club night would be a great place to have our emerging stars perform with the side benefit of being a great way to meet all the hot young guys in town.

Tell us a potted history of your DJ career…

I started DJing in Atlanta with Rupaul in the 90s and then lived in NYC together. We took over NYC fast, playing with Deee-lite and hosting Madonna’s Blond Ambition Tour after-party at my club La Palace. I started Disco 2000, the party featured in the movie Party Monster with Michael Alig and hosted their weekly Hot Body Contest. I changed directions in the 00s by throwing a festival named Electroclash that featured the Scissors Sisters, Peaches, Felix Da Housecat, and Ladytron. In 2008, I had my first gold record under my name with the song ‘Licky’, which featured Princess Superstar, Shontelle, Santigold, Steve Aoki and Sean Garret that was in two #1 movies. And Anthony and I have recently added our musical touch to everyone from Sia, Iggy Azaelia, Afrojack to Cher.

What else have you got coming up that we should look out for?

We have a new album coming out under the name Super Electric Party Machine, too, with lots of amazing guests. Anthony will be releasing his first EP in the fall under his nom-de-plume AttackAttackAttack. And we have to mention our annual Charity Monster benefit in October, which follows previous CM events featuring Perez Hilton, Kelis, La Roux, and Kerry Hilson as well as great designers Henry Holland and Louise Grey. Get your costume ready!
