Back to Oz!

Christmas with The Drama Queens this year is all about the wonderful world of Oz. Playing at South London cabaret Mecca, The Two Brewers’ Spike Rhodes, John Moore and their dedicated cast present their unique twist on L Frank Baum’s popular novels.

The show stars scene cabaret artists Rose Garden, Tanya Hyde, Mrs. Moore and Trindy. All of whom excel in their respective roles. Rose is a natural from the moment she appears, bringing disdain and raw comedy to the stage, totally adored her improvised sections, when she diverts from the script. These are the parts of the show that panto audiences live for. Speaking of comedy, the walking, talking gag-machine that is Mrs. Moore is, as always, hilarious.

There are far too many instances to mention where she has the audience in fits of laughter. Keep an eye out for her take on Cilla Black and Liza Minnelli, though. Tanya Hyde, who probably has the straightest role of the main cast, gets an opportunity to show off her acting, something that you can tell is intrinsic to her. Stand out performances come from Tanya as the fairy and Elphaba, in equal measure.

The supporting cast members all pull together well, with new member Roberto Palfrey – great stage presence/comedy acting – and Craig-erBell Nottingham – brilliant as Dorothy – both standing out. A special mention, too, must go to Titti La Camp, whose omnipresence provides some really enjoyable comedy moments.

The troupe have opted for a mostly multimedia projected set this time round. And as it was opening night, there were a few gremlins, but I’m sure they’ll be ironed out in no time. The costumes are of exceptional quality and add a huge amount of vibrancy to the show.

Even though it was a long performance, as the run progresses the running time will decrease and the fluidity will tighten up, naturally. Summing up, act two was more enjoyable than the first as there were laughs aplenty. There are a few golden nuggets from the first act, however, especially the ensemble numbers. Ending on a fabulous fun finale (won’t give it away) this show will make you smile, laugh and holler.
