Severino Falls 2 Earth!

TheMenWhoFell2Earth interview one of the gay scene’s most talented disc jocks, the wonderful and ever delightful Severino

Ciao, Seve! How are you? What’s going on in Severino’s world at the moment?

Happy and busy. A few travels after a crazy summer and enjoying friends and parties.

Seems you’re always globe trotting somewhere or another. Where have been your recent highlights?

Berlin is always fun and Glasgow for MTV EMA was crazy as always… Looking forward to NYC in December and the Christmas madness.

How do you think London club land is doing at the moment? Anywhere you think it could learn a lesson or two from?

I think London still in top form. Of course, Berghain in Berlin is fab and other places like Tel Aviv or US in general but London is still great. Hydra in Wapping with Todd Terje was a good example last time. Loved it.

How long have you been living and playing in London for? What’s missing from the days you started? What’s changed for the better?

I moved from Italy nearly 18 years ago. I guess it was different in gay land, Vauxhall with Crash, and the rise of Shoreditch, but things move on and it’s great I think. I like to hang out with the club kids.

Have you got a favourite place to play?

Difficult question. Of course Eagle is home, but there’s so many everywhere. Of course NYC is something special to me.

Whose getting you excited musically at the moment?

FaltyDL, kindness, stuff from Hype promotion and Defected is always quality.

Do you think it’s a good time for music right now?

Yes, there’s so much stuff. In fact, sometimes too much to play!

“I think London is still in top form”

Your recent Roisin Murphy remix attracted tonnes of praise from all corners. What shaped the direction of the sound of that?

Keeping it sexy and with style – the old skool Italian chic. She did an amazing job so it was easy.

What else is coming from you on the production side of things?

A remix of KDA featuring Waterson and there’s a new Jon Pleased Wimmin remix coming, too. Too hard to choose one to remix – the 2Bears are so cool and chilled!

If you could time travel to one club or one gig for one night what would it be?

I guess Paradise Garage or Sound Factory.

Leaving house and disco aside, who else would we find on Severino’s iPod?

Tortoise, Pat Metheny, Satie, Gregorian choirs, jazz and soul.

You’re a vinyl and CDs kinda guy, right? Ever see that changing? What do you think of the ever growing trend for computer-based DJing?

Mmmm, I’ve never done it… I’m trying to convert to USBs, which I guess are the continuation of CDs.

What can East Bloc expect from your upcoming set at our Birthday party?

Fun tunes but also edgy housey numbers. I hope I’m gonna make your crowd dance. I love East Bloc, I’m a big fan of basements!

• Severino will be playing with TheMenWhoFell2Earth at East Bloc (217 City Road, Shoreditch, EC1V 1JN) on Saturday 22nd November, 10.30pm-6am.
