TheMenWhoTurned5

Our favourite extraterrestrials, TheMenWhoFell2Earth, have spent five years at City Road’s den of sin, East Bloc! To celebrate they have Horsemeat stallion Jim Stanton taking to the decks to grace the basement with a gymkhana of beats. The boys caught up with him for a chinwag before Saturday’s celebrations.

It’s been ages since we’ve had you back at TheMenWhoFell2Earth, Jim. How’ve the last 18 months been treating you and the HorseMeat gang?

We’ve DJ’d all over the world, like FYF FestIval which is the L.A city sister of Coachella. Was nice to share the bill with Morrissey! We’re pushing through with the new HMD Volume 5 with tracks inspired that we’ve been playing in Berlin & New York over the last ten years.

It’s five years at East Bloc for us this month, which is nothing compared to the 12 years at Eagle you guys have just celebrated! What’s your secret for disco longevity?

Congratulations – MWFTE has always been my fave party in a basement! I think if you’re in there five years on you don’t really need any advice but I’ve always said you should always try to be unique, there are lots of cookie cutter clubs around. Be original, it’s not that hard! Basically just respect other people’s (and our dancers) intelligence musically. Our dear friends and venue owners Mark Oakley & co at Eagle London (the mothership) have been instrumental in the promotion, success and development of HMD.

Our Rebel Rebel party and yours and Wayne’s The Cock both started and ended at similar times and then we both bought them back for one-offs. Nostalgia makes for a great night sometimes, though doesn’t it?

Nostalgia can be a beautiful thing but we try not to plough it too hard. It does of course make a great night, we play disco and it can make some people feel nostalgic but it also evokes so many other emotions which is the beauty. Depends what you play!
For example Mark Moore (S’Express) played a superb set last night at HMD with updated house and disco classics. Truly heart-warming.

Is daytime the new nighttime? Seems like there are more and more day time parties springing up and it’s not just a summer thing. Something you’re a fan of or are they just a product of lack of available venues and licensing laws that don’t love the nightlife?

A bit of what you just said I agree with, I’m not averse to a bit of beach disco in Croatia, but who isn’t? The only time you’ll see me daytime in London is hotsteppin’ out of the club at 6am on the walk of shame! It’s all about the evening!! In terms of venues it’s a problem now to find a cute party spot and continue because there are so many vipers out there out to get ya!

Horse Meat hold down a number of residencies, here and as far-flung as Berlin and New York, right? How do you think being a resident shapes your set versus turning up and playing somewhere less familiar as a guest?

I think it’s a key of our success that likeminded people invite us to their clubs and build residencies or just DJ. People have picked up very quickly on what we’re about there.

So, finally, what should the East Bloc massive ready themselves for on Saturday night?

Everything I said, plus Bowie for Tony. That and a few tequila shots please!

• TheMenWhoFell2Earth’s 5th Birthday is at East Bloc (217 City Road, EC1V 1JN) on Saturday October 24th, 10:30pm – 6am. £6 before midnight, £10 after.
