Fifth Harmony

Dylan Jones chatted to band member Lauren about exploring London, chilling with Snoop Dogg, and being camp on red carpets.

Fifth Harmony are one of our ultimate faves! In the last few months they’ve stormed the charts, racked up hundreds of millions of views on Youtube, and brought a girlband mentality to the US, which can only be a good thing.

Their new single Work From Home is an absolute, premier league banger that feels like it was MADE for dancefloors in Soho (and for living rooms in Hackney at 5am). Well done girls! Ten points to Fifth Harmony.

AND WE GOT AN INTERVIEW WITH THEM. Scream! Well, one of them anyway. Dylan Jones gave band member Lauren a Call From Home, and chatted to her about flying economy, chilling with Snoop Dogg, and being camp on red carpets.

Hey Lauren! We LOVE the video for Work From Home. In fact it’s on repeat in the office as we speak.

Haha! Thank you!

Now the first and most important question is…did you get to hang out with the models afterwards?

Yes. And during. It was a really, really long day of shooting. It was all quite…vigorous.

How lovely.

Yes! They were really cool guys. They, you know, kept us company.

It all looked very physical.

It was just a long day!

Mhmm.

Well you know after a certain point you just get tired!

Well, I imagine you would.

We all definitely kept it going though. But towards the end, that last dance routine, we had to do it like a thousand times. Because we were all so tired we had to keep doing it to make sure everybody got it right.

So…what’s a typical Fifth Harmony night out?

Well we don’t really go out to clubs too much, because we’re in the United States so we’re all under age.

Oh my god! Wow.

But we totally go out when we’re travelling! We love to go dancing. We have a really good time together when we’re on the road. And yeah, when we’re in the US we just go to the cinema.

Ha.

It depends on our mood! We’re actually pretty down to chill in our hotel rooms and not do ANYTHING.

Well when you’re so busy I guess it’s nice just to chill and get room service and stuff.

Exactly! That’s really honestly what we do for the most part.

So you guys are jetting over to London soon aren’t you?

Yes, I’m actually packing to go as we speak. So literally very soon.

What do you guys do here when you come?

First of all, I LOVE London. It’s so amazing. I enjoy the city separately as an individual, because I feel like it has my vibe. I just love it. And I have a couple of friends who live there, so I usually go around with them. When I go places I don’t necessarily like doing all the tourist stuff. I like to explore in the way that the people who live there would. I would rather do what’s local and have fun doing it, than just do what everyone else is doing.

Yes! That’s a QX mentality. You’re one of our girls.

It’s just such a cool town. Everyone is so fashion forward, and wearing really sick shit. And it’s like…kinda dark, but not in a dreary sense, more in like a cool sense. I can’t explain it but…

No don’t worry I get you! So where are you from Lauren?

I’m from Miami. I’m Cuban.

And where are you right NOW?

I’m currently in Dallas. Last night we performed at the opening night of WWE, the wrestling. It’s wrestle mania here! It’s really intense, there were a lot of fans. It was our largest crowd ever actually, a hundred thousand people! It was insane. We sang America The Beautiful and it was actually such an incredible moment. It was just nuts. I really enjoyed it. So yeah, that’s what we’ve been up to. We’re livin’ that fast life brother.

Innit. Do you get cool free stuff on planes?

NO! We usually fly economy. We’re pretty low-key, honestly. Sometimes we get people who recognise us and treat us really nice, so that’s always cool. For the most part we don’t really do much extra. It’s good to keep grounded.

Well, on a different note from that, I just watched that video of you guys performing Worth It ON THE RED CARPET at the European Music Awards. Amazing!

Yaaas! That was so much fun. I loved the idea. We kind of made a serious entrance, I really enjoyed it.

It was quite a camp entrance.

Camp? What’s camp?

You are!

But what does it mean?

“This is our graduation to the next level”

It just means camp.
Oh. I think that’s a British thing.

Oh.

[Pause]

SO! Tell me about your new album.

Sure. It’s coming out in May, and it’s called 7/27. Basically the inspiration for the name came from the fact that 7/27 is July 27th, which is the day the girls and I were formed into a group. We thought it was really appropriate to re-incarnate it because it was our birth, and this is sort of our re-birth album. Like, this is our graduation to the next level. We felt like it was a good choice of name. Normani really wanted a number, so we were riding with the whole number idea. And then I suggested 7/27 just because it made so much sense for our whole existence.

Awesome. So you guys are getting really big now, what’s been your favourite glitzy moment?

Oh my god, well just yesterday we hung out with Snoop Dogg in his trailer, because he invited us to hang out with him for a second. And that for me is just the epitome of everything in my life. Like, I’m pretty sure I can die now and it’d be ok. But yeah, he invited me…sorry, us!

Just you.

Ya just me. He’s my best friend. NO, us! Ha! But no he’s such a nice guy and he’s just really cool and down to earth. Very friendly with everyone, and just really about community. He’s like “hey, let’s all talk and let’s all chill.” You know what I mean? And that for me is what this industry is all about. That’s what art should be about. It shouldn’t be about exclusivity. It should be about everybody just chilling and making beautiful art together.

• 7/27 is set for release on May 20th.
