It’s Summers Time

Drag queen, chanteuse and originator of our favourite insult, “YE FAT OWL!” …it’s Silver Summers! We caught up with our fave gorgey Glaswegian for chirpy chat.

Right hen, what have you been up to?

Hello son. Well, I am the newest gal on the block down at Bombshell, which is a riot! DJing is my new love. I have also just finished a short film about moi which will be revealed very soon.

Tell us about Q Factor, what’s the goss?

Well ‘Drag Knock Out’ was a huge success down at Bloc Bar so George wanted me to come up with an alternative competition to complement it. So I decided to do a singing contest, as I sort of know what I am talking about in that field. So it became ‘The Queer Factor’. We are looking for all manner of queer singers to compete over 10 weeks starting on 6th June. There will be live auditions, Queer camp, 10 chair challenge, judge’s venues and then the live theme shows and finals. It’s our homage to that show on telly but with a Queer edge. I am hosting all proceedings and Vanity Von Glow is my Simon Cowell! There will also be a bevy of other fabulous judges each week and some surprise guests! I have had so many fabulous contestants enter already so I simply cannot wait to see how this all unfolds. Have you got the Q factor?

We hear you have something big planned for Pride. Tell us!

I am so excited about this one! I am producing my own 1 wo(man) show at The Pheasantry in Chelsea, as part of Pride in London, on the 21st of June. It’s basically ‘Silver Summers: The Musical.’ A story from diapers to drag queen. It will be my story of being a little gay boy in Glasgow, coming to terms with being different. My struggles coming out, being in love and then heartbroken, partying a bit too much and becoming a drag queen! I am working together with some really talented musicians and writers to make this a really wonderful night. All the camp faves are in there…Britney, Whitney, Celine, Madonna, Mariah, Cher, Ariana, Spice Girls, Rihanna, Beyonce, show tunes, Disney, Steps, Kylie and more! Oh and original songs written by little old me. I am really baring my soul!

You had your Spice Girls tribute gig for Birmingham Pride recently, how did it go?

Oh, it was mental. When you get us five together its basically the same mad energy the girls had back in the day. We do full choreography, outfits and LIVE vocals, which you wont see on any of the other tributes. The crowd absolutely loved it. They are the best pop band in history! I mean what a way to celebrate 20 years of The Spice Girls! DRAG POWER!

Is it true you lost your trousers?

Well, we were rushed out of the tent because Willam wanted it all for herself. So I must have left my trousers there. Later I checked into a hotel and when I was checking out in the morning I realised they were gone and I only had drag. I was standing in my Aussiebum briefs when the lady came to clean the room, so I bribed her to get me a pair of shorts from lost property for a tenner! Donald, where’s yar troosers?

Did Lady Lloyd manage to behave herself? We’re a bit surprised she’s playing Posh Spice, babe.

Of course she didn’t behave. We were out all night swinging from the rafters pissed as ever. We were searching for Mason Noise for ages, but we gave up and went for a kebab. Lloyd is about as posh as Geordie Shore, but she does a very good Vicky on stage. I have to give it to her! I mean those shoulder movements, points and leg-outs!

What’s happening with the Fabulettes at the moment?

We’re pretty much going it alone, which has been great. We have revamped our image a little as we were tired of the sequined gowns and up-dos. We love doing the Two Brewers and The RVT. The crowds are amazing. We’re still in talks to create a new theatre tour for later in the year too, so we will keep you posted! We’ve just been through so much together that we are now unbreakable!

Have you seen any FAT OWLS lately?

Oh, there were quite a few Fat Owls tooting around the bars in Birmingham, dear! I felt like a bird watcher!

When’s the next Buffalo Girls single?

We would love to but its just time and money dear. Maybe we should start a crowdfunder? Who wants to help us make ‘Amnesia Nights’ the EP?

Anything else you need to plug, hen?

Well I am excited to be playing in my hometown, Glasgow, for Suck in Delmonicas on June 29th. Spice World Live is celebrating 20 years of Spice Girls with the gorge Naomi Smalls, which I am hosting on 23rd of July at West 5. Catch The Fabulettes at Essex pride on July 9th and me at Reading, London and Oxford prides!

• The Q Factor starts on the 6th of June at Bloc Bar (18 Kentish Town Rd, London NW1 9NX) and runs every Monday ‘til the final on the

8th of August. Tickets for Silvers Summers: Uncovered are available at prideinlondon.org or pizzaexpresslive.com
