Great DJs

XXL has got a blinding set of DJs on their books. We had a quick chat with HBIC (Head Bear In Charge) Mark Ames about the dudes who spin the discs regularly at London’s favourite bear cave.

What makes XXL’s music policy so unique?

Me – we have a no repeat policy. The music has to be uplifting and fun, I’m not interested in DJs who think they are cooler than you, better at picking music than you and aren’t playing the music for you. XXL is a grass roots bears club and wherever there are bears, there’s fun.

What can you expect to hear on a night out at XXL?

Grunting and growling mostly by bears and the occasional pigs and a lot of laughter – if you are talking about what you overhear it’ll be “it was that big”, “that will never fit, but it did” if you ‘re talking about music you name it we play it from funk to punk from rock to R’n’B my DJs are free to play what they are asked to. Or what they think will make your feet move! We are one of the few gay clubs that can boast playing the Ace of Spades by Motorhead; not that you will hear that every week, but if it fits within the DJ set and is in his record collection, why not?

Who are your newest additions to the DJ roster?

Our latest addition to XXL is Paul Morrell who is our new resident DJ in the main room – Paul is a well-respected remixer and producer and comes as a breath of fresh air to XXL.
