Restaurant Review: One Canada Square

Continuing in my trend of bringing off-duty drag queens with me to review restaurants (I took Silver Summers on my last one and we ended up in Bombshell), I decided to take internationally-ignored superstar Vanity Von Glow with me to review the slickly space age One Canada Square!

It’s on the bottom floor of the iconic square glass structure, that squats presiding over Canary Wharf like some dystopic, and very expensive sci-fi premonition. If Princess Amidala had stayed in uni halls, they probably would have looked a lot like One Canada Square. She’d have swished down and sat with a glass of crisp pinot, working on her dissertation on the breeding habits of blenjeel sand worms. ANYWAY.

The first thing I noticed about One Canada Square was the lobby (well, obviously). It’s all sliding reflections and shimmering granite surfaces. It’s very reminiscent of the lobby Anne Hathaway’s always stumbling through in The Devil Wears Prada, and it’s the ACTUAL lobby from the Ab Fab movie! So there ya go.

The staff were lovely, and seemed totally nonplussed by the fact that we were dressed slightly male-escort-chic, because it was baking hot that day and we’d been in the park in our short shorts. We settled in with a wonderful wine recommended by the waiter – a crisp pinot, just like Princess Amidala!

For starters, we both plumped for the pea soup with crème fraiche and black olive. Now, I’ve always thought pea soup gets a bad rep. It’s the go-to dish that everyone ridicules for being unadventurous. I think it’s very adventurous! Any dish that’s the colour of a nuclear disaster has to be a LITTLE bit adventurous, right? Anyway, this pea soup was, without doubt, THE best pea soup I’ve ever had. So if you’re a pea soup connoisseur, go to One Canada Square and see if you agree with me.

I followed it up with an unusual dish, the scallop and shrimp burger, with thai slaw and chips. It was sort of a compacted terrine of sea creatures, moulded into a burger. I could have described that in a much more appetizing way couldn’t I. A mouthwatering amalgamation of crustaceans! It was delicious, if a little disconcerting. It’s just a bit weird eating a burger made of lots of little shrimps. Vanity went for the bavette steak, and she said in her usual loquacious Scottish tones, that it was melt-in-the-mouth delicious!

So, One Canada Square was, unsurprisingly, a flawless dining experience. Next time you’re in Canary Wharf, head down there. Who knows you might bag yourself an Armani-suited businessman!

• One Canada Square is at 1 Canada Square, Canary Wharf, E14 5AB. Open for dinner 5:30pm – 11pm from Monday to Saturday, closed on Sundays.
