The Prime of Ms David Hoyle

David Hoyle is one of those unique performers that supersede description. We could try and throw a few adjectives at him, but it wouldn’t really do his unpredictable act any justice.

Instead, the only way you can get a true sense of the anarchic and intellectual charm that has been drawing in people for close to three decades, is to actually catch him live. And, well, aren’t you in luck? ‘The Prime of Ms David Hoyle’ returns to the Chelsea Theatre for a brief run this September.

Inspired by the novel ‘The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie’, Hoyle takes on the role of a similarly eye-opening and inspiring head-teacher at an all-girls academy. Because everyone’s got positive memories of school, right? She tackles the stifling of children’s potential in drab British schools, as well as a variety of other issues, such as the oppression brought about by entrenched gender norms. Pay close attention, you may be tested afterwards.

Every night, she’s joined by some of the biggest names in cabaret, including Christeene, Penny Arcade and Maria Carnesky, as well as the recent graduates from Carnesky Finishing School and Duckie Homosexualist Summer School, who will undoubtedly be treading the sticky stages of London’s cabaret circuit for many years to come. So tuck in your shirt, spit out that gum and stick two fingers up to societal expectations, because David Hoyle’s putting on another evening of inimitable performance, which will challenge and captivate you in equal measures.

• ‘The Prime of Ms. David Hoyle’ is at Chelsea Theatre (7 World’s End Place, King’s Road, SW10 0DR) between 14th and 25th September. Tickets are £8 for concessions and £12 for adults, and are available from www.chelseatheatre.org.uk
