There’s a beautiful new film about the transgender journey

Lucy review

“Imagine being born in the wrong body…”

DJ, performer, and all-round glamorous creature of the night Lucy Fizz is the subject of a gorgeous new film about a journey across the boundaries of gender.

Created with meticulous love by Dutch filmmaker Melinte Reitzema, the film follows Lucy’s journey as she transitioned, through school and university, and finally her burgeoning involvement in East London’s euphoric queer club scene.

Sumptuously shot, with an exceptional and instantly engaging soundtrack, this is not a sombre story of dark struggles – rather, it’s an empowering celebration of independence and of the love and support of friends and family.

The most important thing about this film though, is its accessibility. In our lovely London bubble, we can be in danger of forgetting that a lot of people out there are still bigoted, or if not bigoted, hopelessly underinformed.

Lucy candidly and matter-of-factly lays out the transgender story in emotive detail, that would perhaps make people who are less sympathetic towards the spectrum of gender, stop and think.

Lucy is showing at the Hackney Showroom on 4th April at 19.00, and at The Glory, on 19th April at 20:00.
