Get into Winterville!

Here’s the lowdown on London’s coolest new Christmas paradise

London doesn’t really do winter that well really. While we imagine twinkling, snow-covered, Bridget Jones-esque dashes round Borough Market with a bag full of roasted chestnuts, it’s actually more likely to be a grim, rain-lashed evening on a crowded Oxford Street with a tepid Chai Latte watching Mollie King turn the lights on.

Well, that’s all to change this year! Winterville is the picturesque, pop-up town that will have even the most Scandinavian of you agog in hygge-borne enthrallment! It’s the festive festival from the co-founder of eclectic festival Field Day and was previously held in Victoria Park. This year, however, it’s caught the Overground down to Clapham Common and has set up shop there. Get your boss to have your Christmas party there before he books a table at Scoff and Banter.

Alongside the food stalls, backyard cinema, ice rink, and crazy golf course, a number of London’s fave queer club nights are taking over the SpeigelTent and Roller Disco for some glitter-heavy madness. Here are some we’re looking forward to!

Mariah & Friendz
Sunday 10th December

If you haven’t experienced a night in the company of the M&F gang, you need to rectify that STAT. It’s a wondrously messy performance night, swallowing cabarat, drag, and burlesque, only to vomit it out in a big clump of mind-boggling spectacle! Oh, and Mariah actually plays the 02 on the day after. She will be in London. Probably in a 5-star hotel, but she may want a little excursion. You never know…

R&She
Friday 15th December

Another queer night that have enjoyed a sparkling 2017, with sell-out parties at Heaven and special guest DJ sets from the likes of Salt n Pepa’s Spinderella. DJ triumvirate QBoy, David Oh, and Neil Prince spin the best female RnB and Hip-Hop queens, from Janet to Ciara, Aaliyah to Missy, and they’re bringing the beats to Winterville for a one-off party! Plus, they’re going to be joined by All Saints hun, Melanie Blatt!

Ladies & Gentlemen – George Michael
Sunday 17th December

Nearly a year since his tragic passing, celebrate the music of the irreplaceable pop icon. Paul Simper plays all his hits, deep-cuts, and influences in the cosy Bar Humbug. Incomprehensibly bouffant Last Christmas updo optional.

Sink the Pink Pres. The Merry Marys
Sunday 17th December

Sink the Pink’s quest for worldwide drag domination has continued fruitfully this year, putting on parties at the 02 like they’re Bruno Mars or something. Where do you go from there? Well, Winterville seems to be answer! They bring a one-off Christmas show to Clapham, with an all-singing, all-dancing, all-mincing troupe featuring Dinah Luxe, Jonny Bones, Shirley Du Naughty, Crystal and Ginger Johnson, rattling through some festive faves for ya!
