Whigfield & Strike

Ahead of their set at Eagle London tonight, the 90s legends talk hits and hedonism!

WOWZER! Look at THIS! We’re aware that we use the word ‘iconic’ a bit too much (hi Joanne The Scammer) but in this case, it’s apt. Eagle London is throwing an ICONIC night of 90s summer dance fabulousness, with two of the most infamous and influential names from those heady times – Victoria from Strike, and Whigfield from Whigfield. Major!

They’ll both be doing guest turns on stage, no doubt to rapturous, drink-spilling, drink-swilling, man-snogging appreciation from the audience. The night is one of Mark Loverush’s notorious LOVERUSH nights, and it’s on THIS FRIDAY.

We had a word with the two dancing queens to get an idea of what we can expect from the night, AND, what it was like being stars of the electrifying 90s club scene.

Whigfield (Sannie)

Hey Sannie! You had some major hits…is it surreal hearing your own music when it pops up on TV adverts, or when you’re out in clubs?

I still find it kinda strange, as it brings me right back to 1994 when it all began.

You’ve said before that at first ‘Saturday Night’ took ages to take off – why do you think that is?

I’ve always thought the song was born way before its time. I don’t think people were ready for such a unique sound as Saturday Night, as Italo dance was still very strong.

What was the best moment of those years touring?

One of my favourite moments was definitely being asked to present TOTP’s with Jo Brand.

What do you make of modern music? Who are your fave artists?

The older I get, the less I listen to new artists. I hear a lot of great tracks, but it’s all a bit blurred nowadays. You don’t really hear artists like George Michael or Madonna anymore, maybe apart from Lady Gaga. I personally LOVE MNEK.

Tell us about your upcoming appearance at Eagle.

I’m gonna spit out some old tunes like ‘Think Of You’, ‘Saturday Night’ and I’ll be performing a cover of Jam & Spoon’s ‘Right In The Night”, plus my latest single under my real name [Sannie] ‘Boys On Girls’.

‘Girls On Boys’ – what can we expect from that one?

Hopefully a world dominating kinda hit! I’m doing my best. As soon as I had the melody down on this one, I knew it was special. Well, to me it is.

Victoria – Strike

Hey Vick! Strike came into the music industry at a real moment in time for electronic dance…tell us a bit about the atmosphere in clubs and gigs at the time.

It was so exciting – a new experience for me, I’d only performed in jazz clubs previously. When we first came on the scene the audiences could be quite difficult, as the track was new. But once people became familiar with it and got swept up in the buzz it was creating, the audiences were fantastic – especially in the underground clubs.

Do you think music’s changed for the better or worse?

I couldn’t really say for sure, as I’m not as active in the scene as I was back! I do think that back then there was definitely a creative wave of this kind of music that was continuously strong. I’m constantly reminded of how much people miss the music from back then, and how much the younger generation love that era of music too.

What’s your fondest memory from it all?

Performing at radio road shows to thousands of people. Such an incredible buzz to see  a sea of people in front of you, going crazy to the music you’re performing!

You supported the Spice Girls on one of their tours! What was that like?! Did Vicky B sing?

We performed on one of the same radio road shows as the Spice Girls, which was fun. They were running around being incredibly energetic, so only saw flashes of them. Have always loved the Spice Girls though and did some spontaneous backing vocals for Mel C at a wedding once. I’m not whether Victoria B sang….hmmmm.

What’s been your favourite gig ever?

Ooh it’s hard to say as there are so many! I loved the gig we in Denmark to about 10,000 people on a beach…also I have a very clear memory of this underground club we performed at in Sheffield. The atmosphere was just incredible and I’ll never forget it!

Finally, tell us about your upcoming appearance at Eagle. What have you got in store?

Well, I’m performing four of the Strike singles – Inspiration, the Morning After, My Love is for Real and of course U Sure Do. I absolutely can’t wait!

Loverush Summer 90s is on Friday 29th June at Eagle London, 349 Kennington Lane, SE11 5QY. 9pm – 4am. £6 early bird tickets available from eventbrite, £8 OTD.
