BJ’S WHITE SWAN

26/01/13: As the once bustling Earls Court scene in West London draws its final breaths, new venues are popping up almost exponentially right across the swathe of the East End, from Stratford to Shoreditch and beyond.

But as well as these new, underground and alternative venues, there are still the old school trailblazers that wrote the book when it comes to gay nightlife. At 28 years young, the White Swan in Limehouse is one such venue with a loyal following of locals as well as those that travel for that old school scene feeling.

Part of their enduring popularity is surely an entertainment schedule to rival any. We popped along on Saturday to see the legendary Titti La Camp bring some of our favourite characters to life.

Thankfully in Wicked, the legs didn’t fall off the magic table (unlike a gig we’d seen her at the night before), but one too many bags of crisps made for a wardrobe malfunction that meant Pop Idol Michelle was unable to make an appearance.

Dolly is still working 9-5, and as the years go by, the old bird lady costume really does look like it was made in 1964! Hallelujah – Titti we adore you!

After the show, it was off for a mingle and a shimmy with some luscious local lads to a few hands-in-the-air classics, and before we knew it, night had given way to the early hours of the morning. You could be sure, we had the biggest smile of everyone on the night bus. Nice one, White Swan!
