DRAG IDOL @ THE VICTORIA

12/05/12: “Everybody in the house of love, everybody in the house of love”. OK, Maybe the fact I’m a child (well, teenager) of the 90s is the reason I instantly started singing East 17’s entire back catalogue the moment I stepped foot in Walthamstow.

Thankfully, The Victoria lives up to the lyrics of that particular pop gem, providing me with not only a night of warmth and friendliness but also some of the funniest moments I’ve had this year!

The reason for the excursion so far East? Why, it was The Victoria’s very first Drag Idol heat – and good lord, the E17 massive don’t half know how to do drag in style! Yours truly was asked to be a judge alongside current Drag Idol champion and all round slice of fabulousness Son ofa Tutu, the outrageous Candy Slag in Drag, DJ Dizzy and the lovely Dave Cross from that other magazine that sits next to our magazines in all the queer venues (No, no, don’t go looking for that one, just keep reading this one).

There was a real diverse array of talent, from the sublime to the ridiculous, in a mammoth three-hour sesh of bewigged shocks and cocks in frocks, superbly hosted by Mandy Gap. Stakes were high too, because there’s only one heat at Victoria, the winner will go straight into the semi final.

After a seemingly endless run of cackling, naughtiness and hilariously inappropriate behaviour (looking at YOU Candy Slag) the winner was clear to all judges from as soon as she set foot on stage… Nora Bone was rip-roaringly hilarious, totally deadpan and potentially a brand new shining star on our fair scene.

Well done to ALL the contestants, it’s definitely no mean feat getting up on stage to entertain a room full of tiddly revellers, and thank you to the lovely team and punters at The Victoria for making us feel so welcome.
