G-A-Y BAR – EUROVISION

14/05/11: With all the campery and paraphernalia associated with Eurovision, there really is only one place to watch it, so donning our best Union Jack finery we rocked up to G-A-Y Bar and prepared to cheer, boo and hiss like it was panto season.

With a queue stretching along Old Compton Street, the bunting bedecked bar was already packed as the show kicked off at 8pm and the 25 wannabe’s paraded their wares before an estimated telly audience of 125 million. Predictably the bar erupted both for our boys Blue and Ireland’s Jedward, but also some of the ‘la la’ pop tunes like Hungary. There were boos a plenty as the votes came in and the former Russian states patted each other on the backs and gave their neighbours ‘douze points’, and having come 5th in 2010, 3rd in 2009 and 8th in 2008, 2011 was clearly Azerbaijan’s time, but at the end of the day we pulled in a respectful 11th, with Jedward inching ahead in 8th.

Did you know: Interestingly, there is a huge Eurovision following in Australia and they even hold their own televote! It doesn’t count towards the actual Eurovision Song Contest sadly, as where ‘we’ voted Azerbaijan the best, they actually voted it the worst, and gave the golden gong to Ireland and Jedward. Hey ho, maybe next year!
