IT STARTED WITH A SEMI…

Last weekend’s Semi Finals of Drag Idol proved to be even more entertaining and dramatic than anticipated, with two semis spread over two nights at the Black Cap and Halfway II Heaven.

Our very own Jason Reid was there for both nights and he got the winners reactions within minutes of their victory. Here’s the first exclusive chinwag with this year’s Drag Idol finalists: Mitzi Macintosh, Nora Bone, La Voix and Asifa Lahore.

Jason: You’ve just secured a place in the final. How do you feel?

NORA: Very overexcited! I’m actually wetting myself with excitement, ahead of the final. I’ve had to wear a Tena Lady since coming off stage tonight, and I’m going to have to buy a bulk supply, because I’m going to be excited all week.
MITZI: Ecstatic and surprised. I thought it would be an uphill climb for a mime act because people just love singers. It went a lot better than I hoped for.

ASIFA: I’m on cloud nine! Now I want to go back to Southall and have a big chicken curry with my family.

LA VOIX: Amazed! Surprised! Excited! Thrilled!

How are you going to celebrate?

NORA: I’m gonna celebrate with champagne, cocaine and a great big four skin spliff.

MITZI: I’m just going home. My husbands pissed and I’ve gotta drive! (haha)

LA VOIX:  Tons of vodka and a late night… and a whole week of celebrations!

How would you describe your act in five words?

ASIFA:  Sexy. Forward. Samosa-loving battiness.

NORA:  Psychic Healer. Bum bandit. Hilarity.

MITZI:  The muppets on good acid.

LA VOIX: Future of drag is here.

What have you got in store for the final?

ASIFA: I’m gonna be adding extra spice to the curries and turning up the volume on the Bhangra drums.

NORA: There may be an encore based on the song “I’d like to teach the world to sing” though my version is: “I’d like to teach the world to rim in perfect harmony and lick you tenderly”

MITZI: I’m undecided. I don’t know whether to go back to my old stuff I did at the heats, in the Brewers, or mix it up a bit. We’ll have to wait and see.

What’s the secret to your success?

LA VOIX: My voice, my uniqueness and my politeness.

ASIFA: Being a Muslim!

MITZI: Having a good ear. I can hear single breaths and I listen for the physicality of mime.

Who do you think will be your main competition in the final?

ASIFA: This year’s standard is extremely high and any of us could win. I’m just so happy to be in the final.

MITZI: My main completion is La Voix, because she is polished perfection and a very animated performer, like me. She’s an all round, old school, showgirl.

LA VOIX: Mitzi Macintosh is my biggest competition. She’s Aussie and their drag circuit is fierce! Also, we don’t have a massive mime culture here and she does it so well. So whilst some people see mime as dated drag she could be a point of difference on this scene. I’m keeping my eye on that one.

Any message for your competition?

LA VOIX: Watch this space, watch my face. I’m not miming. It’s fun, frolics and the future.

NORA: Do your best, will it be enough? Nora is giving it large. She only hopes its enough.

ASIFA: Beware because the babe in the Burkha is coming to get you…

Finally, who’s your ‘Drag Idol’?

ASIFA: It’s a toss up between RuPaul and Benazir Bhutto.

NORA: Mrs. Shufflewick. I chose to use some of her jokes tonight and they even worked after thirty years. She was a trooper and a half and very humble. I remember her well because I was a seventeen-year-old lesbian trapped in a man’s body at the time.

MITZI: Skye Brookes, who is a Sydney drag queen from my early days. She was the first person that blended dialogue with songs and drug use, a manic performer who really inspired me. A lot of what I do is a more polished, toned down version of what she did.
