Ku’s 18th Birthday

06/12/13: Ku Bar’s “ku-chi” turned internationally legal last Friday and opened his luscious lips to give a big-boy kiss to everyone who sashayed their way through his saloon doors at their flagship bar on Lisle Street. A classy bit of So-on-the-go-ho, award-winning Ku Bar has laid out a rainbow welcome mat for the sexy suited worker, the hot boy about town and the West End tourist for nearly two decades.

It may have been Ku Bar’s birthday, but we got all the gifts. We were covered in a shower of golden delights with a Gold Themed party. Gold was in the air, our hair and everywhere, especially glazing the hunky barmen sprinkled with gold dust glitter. Owner Gary Henshaw and staff raised over £3,000 for The Food Chain charity.

Naturally our garrulous Irish host kicked off the night with a free round of drinks and 50 goodie bags. Auctions were held for The Food Chain with such glam goodies as a stylish pair of Dunhill cufflinks, tickets for Cirque Du Soleil’s ‘Quidam’, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s ‘Stephen Ward’, a James Bond experience at Hippodrome, a W Hotel stay, and (sigh) an autographed photo by the freshest plunge in the deep end, Tom Daley himself!

The bar was packed with the friendliest folks in town sipping up the Goldschlager in the main bar or nursing a golden martini in the comfy upstairs Champagne Lounge. Devilishly charming main floor VJ, and also birthday boy, Thanos had the golden touch with his video/music mash-ups of 80s classics with a dash of sexy RnB. “I’ve been VJ-ing here for 4 months and I love it. I get a lot of creative freedom and they really appreciate what I bring.”

He finished his set with a wink and a grin under his thick black quiff he asked (rather insisted!) “You’re joining me at the club downstairs, right?” How could I say no! He took me by the hand and cleaved us through the masses in the jumping KuKlub where they partied the way your 18th should’ve been! DJs Peter and the swarthy Alvaro kept it hopping to hi-energy, pop ‘til the wee hours for the kids queuing up the stairs, out the door and down the block!

Gary’s secret to staying 18 years young? “It’s the customers. Their vibe, the atmosphere and the fun that makes Ku Bar.”

Happy birthday to Ku!
