Soho Gay Bars Roundup

02/04/14: Listen, forget your Easter weekend and its organised, religious-tinged nonsense. Last weekend was when Soho really shined. And the only resurrection that occurred happened the morning after – well, we regained consciousness the next morning… PRAISE JEEBUS! Here is our Soho Gay Bars Roundup.

Our debauched crawl of London’s West End began at Admiral Duncan. Last week was (unbelievably) 15 years since the terrible bombing shocked the Soho community. But a decade and a half later, the venue shines better than ever with a ridiculously fun mix of cabaret, tunes and booze – all perfectly on show this weekend. Proving you can’t keep a game girl down, we salute Admiral for rising like a phoenix and constantly re-inventing herself.

Circa is one of our favourite drinking dens, and the little bar that could (and always does) packs in a delicious combo of hot boys, fierce DJs and raving regulars. A resplendent Munroe Bergdorf dropped some RnB-tinged housepop gems to a sexy crowd.

Comptons grizzles and fizzes these days, and spent the Bank Holiday serving up lively DJs and a ridiculously friendly crowd – we totally don’t just go in to try and get into the knickers of beautiful beardy head bar bitch James anymore. We stay for the funnage!

Duke of Wellington is aaaaaaalways heaving and spent the bank holiday duking it out (hee hee, totes journalism that is) in a fit fella noise war with Rupert Street, who share a homo-lined cobbled road. While a gorgeous-looking Rupert Street pumped out the house music to pumped-up fellas (gorgeous in décor and clientele, ya get me!), The Duke went for some poppier sounds and some very lively punters.

The pop-sounding siren song of G-A-Y Bar shows no signs of waning as the Bank Holiday queues snaked round the corner, as per. The Mecca of the under 25s, and us over 25s who want to unashamedly dance to Britney, those cheap drinks will get ya every time.

Meanwhile, The Edge is seriously lighting up Soho Square these days, with four floors of ridiculous fun to be had. With the fabulous Felicia Van Cartier at the helm and the gorgeous bar and gogo boys – THOSE BOYS – barely a t-shirt was seen all night!

Taking a break from the muscle hunks, we exercised our facial muscles at Halfway II Heaven, as Myra Dubois had us in stitches (standard) and Miss Jason – always fun – proved to be a real Bright(on) spark.
Meanwhile, the wonderfully laid back Kings Arms remains at the forefront of homosexuals wearing beards. The fur flew all weekend – well, maybe not flew, but some fur got in a cab back to ours…

Doing the double, Both Ku Bar in Chinatown and ‘Baby Ku’ (Ku Soho) a lil’ further up the road were rammed. Forgive us for sounding one note, but did ALL the fit men grab their tit slings and come out this weekend? A massive chunk of those were imbibing in one of the Ku’s – particularly loving the look of Baby Ku these days.

Whatta man, whatta man, what a mighty good Manbar… Am I showing my age there? Regardless, we love love love the mix of young, old, skinny, muscly and chunky the Charing Cross Road bar has milling around its stripper poles. Industrial, blokey and eclectic; this is what gay bars were before all yer fag hags started pouring in, but with a distinctly 21st century twist *applauds*.

Last but not least, The Yard. Livin’ in a smokers paradise, but we stayed for the banging tuneage too. We love the décor, we love the crowd, we love that we can catch people who’ve pretended to quit having a crafty fag. Summer’s coming – and you know this place is gonna shine even harder!
