THE BLACK CAP

07/06/13: For the past six weeks I’ve been on a diet of mostly Drag Idol, the odd gasp of air and a slurp of Fiji water here and there.

So as the big semi final weekend began it was time for one last push as I headed to North London’s iconic Black Cap. Titti La Camp, who’s also been following the ‘Drag Idol diet’, was our host, inviting five acts, representing venues from London and the Midlands, to give it their all on the very stage that cabaret greats such as Lily Savage and HIH Regina Fong reigned supreme.

Five judges: Mary Mac, Tanya Hyde, Baga Chipz, Dave from Boyz and myself presided over a veritable feast of talent. Everything from lip-sync to traditional drag via alternative ice cream gorging passed in front of us over the course of the two hour competition. There was even a spot of controversy, but everything soon ironed itself out in the end. Group hug? If you weren’t there, you missed out. Slapped ankles.

The crowd, which included Halfway’s manager, Angel and Two Brewers’ Jimmy Smith lapped up all of the performances till the bitter end. And after much deliberation, several shots, myself and Dave from Boyz reenacting the famous lily pond cat fight between Krystle and Alexis in Dynasty, and Baga Chipz -channelling Mrs. Slocombe – flinging pussy jokes around like they were eggs on Britain’s Got Talent, we FINALLY reached a decision.

Martha D’Arthur was our winner. She had the audience in the palm of her hands throughout her set, which included a clever section on the recent Lords vote on gay marriage and a brilliant rendition of Erasure’s ‘Respect’.
