West Five 16th Birthday

26/07/14: QX checked out one of West London’s brightest LGBT beacons as West 5 rocked a storming sixteenth birthday bash last weekend.

Kicking off at midday with alfresco antics in the packed garden, the South Ealing landmark drew in a crowd of loyal locals and those from farther afield for a live stage show, sizzling summer barbecue and celebratory frolics galore.

Highlights saw drag stalwart Lola Lasagne entertaining the masses with cabaret standards, bawdy banter and even a rousing rendition of bar mitzvah fave, ‘Hava Nagila’, that had the crowds throwing up their hands as if they’d been born in Jerusalem.

Elsewhere, there were more live shenanigans from Drag Idol 2013 winner, Martha D’Arthur, dedicating ‘Wind Beneath My Wings’ to her West 5 fans, plus thrilling club classics with Angie Brown, fresh from wowing our Geordie brothers and sisters at Newcastle Pride and nailing those funky vocals for the likes of ‘I Say A Little Prayer’ and 90s anthem ‘I’m Gonna Get You’.

Come 7pm, the proceedings headed inside for an action-packed evening hosted by the outrageous Sandra London, with top class DJ sounds and performances to come from Lady Imelda, Topsie Redfern, The Buffalo Girls, Jason Prince and many more as one of our best local LGBT venues demonstrated why it’s still going strong after more than a decade and a half on the scene.

Congratulations from everyone at QX to the West 5 team. Here’s wishing you all the best for the future!
