BOY GEORGE’S 50TH BIRTHDAY

14/06/11: The glitzy, the great, the glam, the good, the bad, the ugly and those we thought were long since dead all gathered to pay homage to the man, Boy George, on his 50th birthday last week. For better or for worse – be it in salacious tabloid scandal or for his momentous contribution to British culture, fashion and music over the past thirty years – surely BG is now truly worthy of national treasure status? Few fly-by-night modern day ‘celebs’ could attract the myriad of characters that descended on a decadently dressed-up Lightbox in Vauxhall for the occasion.

Original club kids and party freaks of the 80s turned it out and brushed shoulder pad-to-shoulder pad against their contemporary counterparts, showing just how much cultural relevance Boy George has today as he did when he first (dis)graced our screens with his edgy looks, silken voice and timeless music.

Beth Ditto, Skin, Janet Street Porter, All Saints’ Melanie Blatt were there alongside the likes of scene starlets such as Princess Julia and Tasty Tim, all personal friends of the mighty BG. What a party!

Congrats to Fat Tony for pulling the whole thing off effortlessly, transforming the Fire garden into a harem of velvet drapes, couches and cushions… and not a yard of cheap chiffon in sight.
But biggest congratulations, of course, go to Boy George for 50 years of a life certainly less ordinary… and we love him all the more for that!
