09/02/13: The sound systems in Vauxhall might try to drown out any music genre but house, but across London the gays still dance to a different beat.
And in Dalston they were slut-dropping and booty-popping to old-school hip-hop. Bust Yo Nut! swaggered into Dalston Superstore last weekend to launch a credible new hip-hop night for the gay scene. And forget your 50 Cent and gangsta lyrics, this is hip-hop and R’n’B from the 80s to now that’s all about positivity and fun.
There’s no putting a bullet in no gansta’s ass at this party. Italian stallions Severino and Nico De Ceglia took their places downstairs for more contemporary tunes, while hip-hop aficionados Mistamaker and JC Wood from Hard Cock Life were in the top bar.
Dalston it may be, but there was a definite vibe of US street culture about the place that gave even East End hipsters that Brooklyn edge. Finding a natural home in the New York-styled dive bar, Bust Yo Nut!’s stateside sass is a welcome addition to London’s gay scene. Pump up the volume, boys.
