04/10/14: And what a fracking event is was, when the doyens of high fashion and London nightlife clubbing came together for an immense event of performance, awareness and almighty music to make the heavens part! But the theme of the night was evidently in the title: Fracking Hell.
The controversial energy process could pollute your drinking water and send tremors through your house thanks to the government’s change to trespassing laws, which is why Dame Vivienne Westwood and her son Joe Corré joined forces with promoter Martyn Fitzgerald to put together this huge spectacular and bring the issue to people’s attention.
In the state-of-the-art space that is the fabulous iCAN Studios of Hackney Wick, Bourgeis & Maurice, one of the most acerbically funny cabaret duos on the scene, kicked off the performance, followed by acts like new girl power singer Lemon and the absolutely fabulous Natalie Geographic.
It was all compered and held together with professional suaveness by John Sizzle, and the finale of the stage was the very Miss Westwood herself, who spoke eloquently and rousingly about the dangers of this very real issue.
Then the lights went down, the DJs got on the decks and the music went up as Hackney Wick prepared to dance itself into the small hours.
People have been saying recently how all activism doesn’t have to happen on the streets, you can raise awareness, in a myriad of ways, and Fracking Hell… I’m Handsome perfectly proved the truth of this concept.
A great and valuable night, which many will remember.
