G-A-Y - QX JUKEBOX

G-A-Y – QX JUKEBOX

02/04/11: As QX editors, we’ve always been secretly jealous of all the fun/kudos/attention/sex them DJs get. We get press release after press release of delicious-sounding club nights, followed a few weeks later by pictures of the event. Don’t get us wrong, we attend these events, but you don’t get groupies by finishing the evening collapsed in a gutter at the back of the venue – like we usually do. But you DO if you’re a superstar DJ with hot mixing skills and muscles to match. Enough was enough. G-A-Y owner Jezza J wanted to boost his charity coffers (he and all the wonderful staff at Heaven and the G-A-Y bars are aiming to raise £58,000 for the Elton John AIDS foundation) so we thought it was the perfect time to give something back, do something good – and finally be adored like DJ Gods!

So QX Jukebox was born. Taking over our favourite room in Heaven, the Departure Lounge, the aim was to get punters to give us a quid and we would play any track they like. Giddy at the thought of playing a room all night, it wasn’t until about two days before we realised a one-eyed goat with no hoofs would probably be better DJs than us – and how the hell were we going to cater to these random requests? Spotify Premium it is then! (Lee: Hey, can we expense that? Kletus: No.)

On the night itself, a plethora of G-A-Y party people poured into the DP lounge, whilst Kletus and Lee lived up to the QX legacy, by slowly getting as hammered as humanly possible. But fear not – our DJ skills didn’t suffer… we were awful from the start!  Whilst Kletus dropped off the back of the stage and stopped records halfway through, Leeona consistently played the wrong tracks on an increasingly blurry computer screen and the occasional request dribbled from his brain and out of his ear like a mini waterfall of lost thoughts – but what an AMAZING night! Without question the prize for ‘Best Request Of The Night’ goes to the fella who requested ‘The Little Mermaid’ – a wonderfully bizarre choice. The feeling of seeing people respond to what you’re playing, and knowing that you’re helping a fantastic cause is something that just can’t be topped, and it made it all the more worthwhile knowing we helped raise a whopping £2,035!
