G-A-Y ‘WEST END STARS’

28/01/12: It was sequins, soprano and high-powered stage presence this weekend at Heaven – with West End musical stars, Louise Dearman and Leanne Jones, taking to the stage.

Like ducks to water, the women burst from the wings to deliver recent masterstrokes in musical scores, as well as some legendary mainstream numbers. First to serve the baying Broadway enthusiasts was Dearman; and the golden-haired, sequin gowned diva didn’t waste a second.

Barbra Streisand’s ‘Being Alive’ was brought to life so uncannily true to form, one couldn’t be blamed for craning to see if she was crooning into a hidden mic behind stage curtains. Before we’d all quite finished our come down, Dearman was working her way into Abba’s ‘The Winner Takes It All’ whipping the room into a frenzy of companion clutching and fanatic warbling along.

By her final song, Dearman had scaled every note on the score-sheet, withering even the most reluctant (strictly masc. – non-musical) onlookers to a rapturous round of applause!

It was here that the buxom, bright smiling Leanne Jones appeared, belting Hairspray’s ‘Good Morning Baltimore’ for euphoric effect. Powerhouse ballad ‘On My Own’ was followed by Jocelyn Brown’s ‘Ain’t Nobody’ (bringing the bruthas front of house) and, after a Marilyn-esque birthday boop-boop-be-doop for Hayley the dog, Hairspray’s ‘I Can Hear The Bells’ was the final number to be dropped. Much like all our plans for the next matinee performance. Bravo, ladies!
