LUCKY 13!

Salvation is back at Café de Paris, its original venue, for its 13th anniversary event! Alan X talks to Team Sally: promoter Steve ElliottDJ MisWhite and new host Marnie Scarlet

Chic, stylish clubbing is something with which Salvation has always been associated. Over the years it has become a global leader in the ever-changing world of club brands. Now on 13th November, celebrating its thirteenth birthday, the club returns to its original glamorous birthplace, London’s Café De Paris. We asked three of its team for their thoughts on this exciting, full circle event.

Steve Elliot is the club’s engine room and promoter: “It has been the best time in my life. I try not to take it for granted – working in London one weekend, the following weekend in Chicago, Moscow or Sydney. It’s a dream-come-true but a lot of hard work – like being a trolley-dolly but with a disco at the end of every flight!”

I wondered if London clubbing is having a mini renaissance? “London used to have the best gay scene in the world,” says Steve: “built on great parties like Love Muscle, Trade, DTPM, Crash and Salvation, but flat-lined for various reasons. It’s a real pleasure to do Salvation in Café de Paris for the 13th anniversary. It holds so many great memories.”

Resident DJ MsWhite continues, “London most definitely is the party centre of Europe – no matter which country you go to people always relay stories of when they went partying in London and how much they loved it.”

“Uplifting, funky, sexy, chunky tech and progressive house, decorated with dirty bass lines and a little electro.”

I wonder why dancing under a chandelier is so damn fabulous? “It’s something no other venue in London offers…” says MsWhite: “Salvation is renowned for that and walking down those spiral stairs – it feels like ‘Gone With The Wind’! People still talk about the Café De Paris and ask ‘when will Salvation return?’ so a lot of old skool clubbers will come out on this special occasion. I’m so excited!”

Salvation has traveled the world and the gang all have favourite memories. MsWhite jumps in, “Salvation in Bali when we did our open-air event on the beach, watching a storm at the end of the party, which lit up the whole sky with lighting strikes and dramatic clouds. It was exhilarating!” She continues: “Three of my favourite Salvation gigs have to be Moscow, Chicago and Belo Horizonte in Brazil – The crowd response was phenomenal.”

Fresh on team Salvation, just who is new host, Marnie Scarlet and why should we idolise her? “She is the scarlet diva of fetish cabaret and she should be Idolised coz she is hawt damn fabulous!” Marnie herself explains, in a shriek: “An outrageous host makes you feel you ended up at just the sorta night your parents warned you against!”

How did she get involved with Salvation? “I got in touch with Raul and Steve via Facebook. They loved my looks, I loved their party, now it is time to make the magic happen!” Some of Marnie’s photos look like a “burlesque nightmare” – I wonder is that an accurate description of her look? “Hahahaha, not bad at all” she screams!

So who is her favourite icon? “I love Dolly Parton, she is all real and all plastic!” In my mind I try to reconcile our beloved Dolly into some random nightmare imagery but move on quickly!”

How does MsWhite describe her ‘tea-dance’ Salvation sound? “Uplifting, funky, sexy, chunky tech and progressive house, decorated with dirty bass lines and a little electro – people have either been out partying all night, or are fresh and sober so they don’t want anything too heavy.”

I ask her which DJs and producers she follows? “David Penn, I LOVE his production! He always has his finger on the pulse.”

And what will Marnie bring to his first London party: “A whole lot of fantastical rubber looks, maybe a bit of body piercing as well as some elements of my performance art!” Where does she get her ideas? “I get very inspired by fetish, Hollywood glamour, pop culture and nightmares!” [Laughs] Marnie is so delicious looking and immaculately conceived I have to ask does she ever go out to buy a carton of milk without wearing make-up? “Oh my God… Nooooo! A day without maquillage is a day that hasn’t been lived!” [Laughs]

Asked for three reasons why a Salvation virgin should visit this party, MsWhite puts it in a nutshell: “The music, the crowd and, of course, the venue”!
