MEET THE DEVIANTS

From special events at Heaven to a regular night at Barcode, then onto a series of successful collaborations with Beyond, Deviate has been adding a twisted dimension to nightclubbing for some time now. This weekend, promoter Pagano takes the concept out on its own for the first time. Prepare to be perverted… this disco is demented!

PAGANO

What sets Deviate apart from other club nights?

Pagano: Deviate is more than just a party with DJs and dancers. It is more of a ‘happening’, a multi-disciplinary art-performance sensory experience where performers and DJs come together. For every event we pick VJs, performers and hosts who have that theatrical artistic side to their work. For this event we have picked the legend that is Jonny Woo and Shaun Prickimage, who brings his unique VJing style to the event. Our first host is the very colourful Antonio Gigliotta.

What can we look forward to musically?

I choose DJs whose podcasts contain the music I would like to hear in a club: a range of sounds going from deep house to techno, techouse to nu-disco, indie dance and electronica. Every event will offer a different line-up with some recurrent guests and some DJs that you have never heard in Vauxhall. For this event we have Marco Gee, Massimo Paramour, Nic Fisher, Tasty Tim and Borja Peña. Every one of them has a different style of DJing and plays a unique sound. Don’t you just hate when you hear the same big tune four times during the same night? At our party this will never happen.

Sounds like fun! Will it be a regular event or is this a one-off?

Because of the nature of the event and the amount of work and research we put into it, Deviate will only happen 5 to 6 times per year. To be honest, the reason why Mark [Williams] and I decided to host Deviate is because we want to put on a party where everyone can enjoy something completely different from what is the typical weekly offering.

JONNY WOO

Oh, la Woo! How was Christmas? Did Santa bring you everything you wanted?

JONNY WOO: I got a toolbox, a giant Superman mug and The Diary Of Anne Frank. I went home to my sisters and without even knowing it, we re-enacted classic scenes from early Mike Leigh movies, then I came back to London and partied in my boyfriend’s shed.

What will Jonny Woo be up to in 2012?

The Jonny Woo Show is up-scaling in the spring and I am working on a stage version of Last Exit To Brooklyn. I felt like doing something cheery! Gay Bingo continues at Soho Theatre and now I have worked my way around garage band, expect some very silly songs about trannies in distress… as opposed to ‘dat’ dress. I will definitely be at the Edinburgh Fringe, Lovebox is going to be even more exciting than ever and expect the biggest alt/trans stage show in the autumn, what with the absence of Glastonbury this year.

We haven’t seen you in performance capacity in a Vauxhall house music club in ages! What can we look forward to from you at Deviate?

I have two monkey suits now, one in black and one in white. I am feeling particularly experimental, as I always do in January, so don’t expect it to make too much sense. I am currently obsessed with Mary Portas, so there could be a tribute to her, and as always Wonder Woman is never far away. Whatever will happen it will be AMAZE-OG!

PR‡CKIMAGE

Who is PR‡CKIMAGE? How would you describe your work?

PR‡CKIMAGE: A creative studio directed by myself, Shaun Patick James, specialising in Better Digital Intercourse including Video Art, Live Video Mixing (VJ), WALKABOUT Projection, Interactive Installations. It is just as comfortable working solo or with international collaborators. For this project SAPOLAB, an Interactive Programmer, lives in Italy and we video chat and remotely share computers. Other recent projects include the Chemical Brothers’ new movie, Space Ibiza with WYS!, Nokia, Carephone Warehouse, Musion Eyeliner Holographic System.

How will you give Deviate its identity through visuals?

Interactive madness and big fun! Over-sized freakish projected avatars giving twisted attitude, controlled by gogos, responding to movement and audio… super-sensory overload like never seen before in gay underground. If you got the moves you can also have a go…available for Xbox Kinect soon! LOL

• Deviate is at Factory (65 Goding Street, Vauxhall, SE11) on Saturday 14th January.
