RVT

10/09/2015: You know what’s a rarity these days?

Going to a live show and seeing almost no one with their smartphones super-glued to their hand, hunched over, tip-tapping away or holding them in the air to video the show, just so they can post the grainy clip on YouTube (which no one will watch anyway). So you can imagine my surprise when the total opposite was the case for Toyah’s one-off Up Close and Personal show.

The RVT was a packed house and transfixed from the moment she tottered onto the stage, with a welcoming and ethereal presence. The attentive audience were treated to two 40 minute sets, in which Toyah sang some of her greatest hits and fan favourites including Dawn Chorus, It’s a Mystery, I Want to be Free and many more from a back catalogue spanning over thirty years.

In between songs the pocket rocket pop-star shared memories of the past, proud achievements, and obstacles she had to overcome personally, as well as hopes for the future. There was always something to grab your attention and enjoy, especially with the nifty addition of projected images and clips throughout.

Not that this audience needed their attention grabbing, the stillness in the room was palpable when Toyah spoke. This all worked beautifully together. A show to remember, and another RVT live music Thursday in the bag. Who will they have next? I’m hoping Dolly Parton or Sam Fox. Or maybe both together. I’ll stop now.
