SECRET SUNDAYS

09/10/11: Marking 10 years of GaydarRadio and featuring some of the biggest names in music; those in the know headed to Lo-Profile for the first in a series of 10 intimate ‘Secret Sunday’ acoustic sessions last weekend.

With the identity of the launch artiste kept firmly under wraps, we had absolutely no idea who we were turning up to see perform, but could scarcely have wished for a better choice than reigning UK queen of soul, the one and only Beverley Knight.

Long a supporter of the LGBT community, the versatile Midlands lass proved she’s just as comfortable playing to a handful of appreciative West End homos as she is to thousands of adoring fans around the world. Kicking off with a stripped-down take on 1997 smash ‘Made It Back’, further high points included a heartfelt rendition of George Michael’s ‘One More Try’ (hitting notes some of today’s chart pretenders can only dream of), a rousing ‘Keep This Fire Burning’ and a funked-up version of Junior’s 80s classic ‘Mama Used To Say’ from her current album before finishing off with a staggering ‘Piece Of My Heart’ that had the place going wild.

We caught up with GaydarRadio’s all-action station manager, Robin Crowley, before the show who, whilst refusing to be drawn on who the remaining nine acts might be, assured us that they are ‘all top 40 artists’. We can’t wait for the next one – but for those of you who fancy a bit of Beverley, tune in to Gaydar Radio this Sunday for a full broadcast of the show!
