Ted’s Place

29/10/15: The entrance, located in a half shopfront in west London on street made quiet by the time of night, could be easily missed.

But once you’re in though, and you’ve gone down to the basement where the club is housed, the warm welcome from the small team running the place creates something far from your typical London gay bar. It has the look and feel of a provincial club (and this extends to the price of the drinks) but offers a relaxed and discreet sanctuary for transvestites, transsexuals, their friends and their admirers.

It feels like everyone knows each other and is part of one big extended family.

Though the cruise nights on Tuesdays and Fridays mean the bar turns mainly gay and caters for a different audience.

The voluptuous and lovely Natasha behind the bar was, it turns out, this publication’s first covergirl and Dennis, who’s been a DJ for 40 years, has spun his mix of good old-fashioned dance music at this particularly deck for 14 of those years!

Think mixes of Whitney and Michael Jackson, the kind of 90s music you’d have to listen to ironically in East London but secretly adore! Last Saturday, a big party marked the 25th anniversary of the venue; its longevity a sure sign of its appeal and success.
