Queer Nation

09/11/13: Queer Nation at Barcode marked 23 years of marching to a different beat.

Promoter extraordinaire and host DJ Patrick Lilley greeted us at the front bar with friendly disco anthems. The kind of soulful vocal funk that sweeps us in and warms us up inside to prep us for the big splash awaiting us in Barcode’s inner sanctum. Patrick handed over the reins to Mark Ashley Dupe and Niyi Maximus Crown who mixed it up with urban house, R’n’B, afro-beats and 90’s Old Skool.

The main room had us swirlin’ with resident DJs Mista Pierre and Supadon. The beats got harder, the men got hotter and the shirts got… lost! The house was packed to overflowing with dancers taking over both rooms, and even the upstairs chill out lounge. What’s changed after 23 years? Patrick looks around and smiles, “The mixture of the crowd has definitely grown.” Indeed.

Where else can you find such a happy mix of urban street cool and gay effete all in one cosy club? This is one nation under queer we can all live in.
