Big Wiggy Style!

Way back in 2005, a Spanish club night called Pelucas y Tacones was born. Which, when translated, simply means ‘Wigs and Heels’. Now, nine years on, they’re throwing a super soiree to celebrate all things flamboyant in the world of 90s raving. And in honour of their 9th birthday, we’re giving you 9 Reasons to don those weaves and stilettos with glorious abandon!

Erm… The wigs?

Obviously. Like we even needed to give you this as a reason. It’s the perfect place to flaunt your new lace front, and seeing as Pelucas y Tacones was born out of a love for 90s rave, that means you can relive those neon blue bunches – Gwen Stefani style. OK, she might not have been a raver, but with that hair she was definitely high on something.

The heels…Duh!

Although we’re not quite sure how one can cut a rug in stilettos, we’re totes gonna try. After all we’d much rather break an ankle than be seen dead in flats.
Still, that’s the good thing about raves – all the cool people two-step anyway – so time to dust off the stripper platforms!

The camp/trashy dresscode

So we’ve covered the hair and heels… Pelucas y Tacones is the one night when a Spanish seniorita (or señor) can dress like a total slut and nobody can say anything about it. (See how the wise words of Regina George are adaptable to the biggest fiesta of the year?) And remember, unless you’re pulling bits of glitter out your bum cheeks a fortnight down the line – your outfit wasn’t OTT enough!

Glowsticks and Strobes

Because everybody loves things that light up and flash repeatedly in the dark – well, except epileptics.

The Music

Make sure you’ve got your smart phone at the ready, sister – and we don’t just mean because of all the selfies you’ll be taking in your crop tops and fish nets #RaverBaby! But no, we mean when Alejandro Ascencio and Pepi drop that N-Trance track you haven’t heard in two decades, you’re gonna wanna Shazam that shit!

Their special guest

Not only will the resident DJs be dropping those songs that made up your teens (or perhaps twenties or thirties…), but Chimo Bayo – legendary Spanish DJ and producer – will be taking to the stage. Those of you familiar with Spanish music will undoubtedly know his track ‘Asi Me Gusta a Mi’, and those of you more into recent hits will have heard it sampled by M.I.A…

The atmosphere

You remember what 90s raves were like, right? No attitude, no drama – or well, not ’til some queen turned up in the same outfit as you. Nah, even then you let her get away with it because it looked better on you.  And when it came to sexuality, there were less labels than a pile of clothes from Primark. In fact the lines of sexuality were more blurred than our memories.

The new venue

Long term regulars will know that PYT began at First Out Café before moving to the Concrete Basement in Shoreditch. Now, with a growing following, they’re migrating to an even bigger venue – The New Empowering Chuch. Decked out with harem-styled sofas and neon lit palm trees, it sounds like the perfect paradise to spend the night before we avoid landing in the gutter at 5am.

The men

Last, but certainly not least! Sure, half of them may have synthetic strands of sweaty weave stuck to their beards, and others may be in the corner nursing themselves with ice packs after attempting to slut-drop in hooker heels, but there Pelucas y Tacones also attracts a gorgeous crowd of sexy Spaniards that look tastier than traditional paella. Yum!

• Pelucas y Tacones (Wigs and Heels) 9th Anniversary ‘Back to the 90s Rave’ will be at The New Empowering Church (1a Westgate Street, E8 3RL) on Saturday 20th September from 9pm-late. £5 before 10.30pm, £8 after.
