BLACKMAIL BOYS (18)

Greg Araki’s acclaimed 1993 hit gets digitally re-mastered for a new DVD release, and it’s well worth revisiting as after almost 20 years it’s still eerily current.

The Shumanski brothers have sharpened their filmmaking skills since their last movie Wrecked. Yes, it’s another gay drama with a natural, explicit approach to sex, but this blackly funny film has stronger story and more involving characters. It centres on a young guy (Nathan Adloff) working as an escort to pay his way through art school. Then his boyfriend (Taylor Reed) recognises one of his clients as a Christian fundamentalist preacher, and they launch an extortion plot. Yes, there are big themes here, but what makes it worth seeing is the sexy intimacy of the boys’ relationship. (TLA). 8/10
