Church of Dreams

Samantha Togni is resurrecting Hoxton Square with her chaotic holy homage to cool, Church of Dreams.

Believe it or not, Hoxton Square wasn’t always about Gourmet Burger Kitchen and bored Westminster University students smoking cheap weed. Not so long ago it was the melba toast of East London’s organic corner shop. It was Naomi Campbell falling off a table at Boombox. It was Russell Brand pissing in a phone box. It was Sadie Frost snogging Sharleen Spiteri for a free pint of Carling. Bette Midler was once buying a dildo from the sex shop on the corner (Abdul who works at Chicken Cottage told us that so it is absolutely, 100% true).*

Anyway, now the Hoxton Square of old is having a holy renaissance in the form of Church of Dreams at Zigfrid von Underbelly. Run by celesbian fashion icon and DJ extraordinaire Samantha Togni, Church of Dreams is more than just a club night. It’s a concept, a destination. It’s a baptism of cool as she turns water into wine. Well maybe not. Maybe Glens Vodka into Smirnoff Vodka.  She’s taken it all over Europe, from Milan to Madrid and now she’s back in London, preaching underground beats and kick-starting the second coming of Shoreditch’s cool collective.

This time she’ll be aided by the smoky-eyed prince of darkness, Ray Noir. He says he’s from Norway but we think he just slithered out from under Kingsland Road Bridge one blustery winter night. As well as DJing his trademark dirty electro pop sleaze, he’ll be performing his single ‘Double Trouble’. It’s sort of EDM meets scandipop meets techno. Think Robyn tossing off Marilyn Manson. While Loreen watches, thoughtfully munching on a Daim bar. As well as Ray there’s Chema Diaz – he’s more than a DJ. He is ALSO a concept, a destination. He’ll be spinning futuristic, lovely sounds. Futuresex Lovesounds, if you like.

Samantha has left us with this rather ethereal summing up of her budding den of debauchery; “We do not bother to write long scriptures or set too many rules. We only follow one Commandment and that’s very simple: the only thing that we take seriously is that people are there to have fun and let others do the same. Welcome to the Church Of Dreams.”
