Clubs of Colour

Black and POC nights happening in the city this month!

Batty Mama

Friday 21st October

After a sweat-drippingly successful extravaganza back in July, queer party night Batty Mama is returning this Friday for another deathdropping, neck-snapping night of unapologetic insanity.

Descending on East London’s hive of creative madness Dalston Superstore, Batty Mama is a night that celebrates, prioritises and promotes diversity in all its kaleidoscopic, eclectic glory. With a focus on creating a safe space for people of colour, Batty Mama celebrates EVERYONE, black, white, asian, latino and everyone else (except maybe Tory).

And we’re approaching Halloween, so this Batty Mama is a Halloween special! [Insert bat emoji here]. The theme is Strip It Back. “Imagine Black Panther and Sin City had a love child in post-apocalyptic London” they said about the dress code. We’re picturing lots of shiny leather and monochrome. And maybe red contact lenses. RAWR!

Music-wise, there’s gonna be all sorts, but the feel will be afrobeat, with old skool 90’s r&b, dancehall, hip-hop, funk and Detroit techno thrown in. Fucking fierce, basically. As well as all that, there’ll be a sparkling amalgamation of live performances and visual art.

Here’s what the organizers had to say:

“Batty Mama is a down and dirty, open and enticing dystopic space for queer and trans bodies from all constellations and cultural backgrounds, reclaiming booties of colour. A mixed art and multi-media club night reclaiming BATTY’s in every way possible.”

• Batty Mama is at Dalston Superstore, 117 Kingsland High Street, E8 2PB. 9pm – 3am. £6 entry.

The Cocoa Butter Club

Thursday 27th October

The Cocoa Butter Club is the sequin-spattered brainchild of gorgeous cabaret lioness and QX cover star Sadie Sinner. She started it up last month because 1) she’s fabulous and does what the fuck she wants and 2) she was disappointed at the lack of cabaret by and for people of colour in London.

To say last month’s was a success, would be like saying Beyonce’s VMA performance was “ok”. It was major! Models, scene faces, activists and performers burst through the doors of Camden venue Her Upstairs in droves, jostling to glimpse the glamorous creatures gracing the stage.

This month Sadie saunters back in style, with a stellar lineup of performers, including Miss Cairo, Coco Deville, Lady FKA and more. Shows start at 8pm, but the doors open at 7pm for a special networking hour for performers and guests to mingle, drink, flirt or do whatever they want!

• The Cocoa Butter Club is at Her Upstairs, 18 Kentish Town Road, NW1 9NX. 9pm – 3am. Free entry.
