Community: Graces Cricket Club

Apparently, Graces Cricket Club is the only gay cricket club in the world! Which is surprising really, because cricket is quite a gay sport. Quite salubrious. One associates cricket with spotless white trousers, and popping succulent strawberries in your mouth to the sound of cork thwacking against willow.

It’s quintessentially British, but in a good way, not in a nationalist racist way. All very civilized. None of that screeching football nonsense, what. You’ve got to be a good sport about the whole thing. Stiff upper lip and all that. If you lose, you shake hands with the winner and go and have a nice cup of tea. With the good china.

Graces Cricket Club is relatively young, having been established in 1996. Their aim is to promote the joy of cricket within the LGBT community. A noble goal indeed!
“We operate a truly inclusive selection policy,” they said “Our pool of players ranges from experienced club cricketers with league backgrounds, through to strictly social players, and a few who are playing their first organized cricket with us.”

“New players are always more than welcome – especially so at present, as we are actively working towards being able to field two teams per weekend.”
So, can’t argue with that! Buy yourself some whites and give it a whirl. And bring your drag queen mates along to sit on the sidelines in sunglasses and pop strawberries in their mouths. It’ll be major!

• For the 2016 season, Grace’s homeground will be at London Marathon Playing Field, Birkbeck Avenue, Greenford, Middlesex UB6 8LS.
