COMMUNITY: Switchboard – LGBT+ Helpline

Sometimes when you have an issue, sharing it with someone else and hearing another person’s voice can do a world of good, which is why telephone counselling is still so frequently used today. For example, Childline recently disclosed that they had received a record number of calls, around 8 a day, from children about gender dysmorphia and transgender issues. Switchboard still answers around 20,000 calls a year.

Switchboard was founded in 1974 and was originally called London Lesbian and Gay Switchboard, only re-branding to Switchboard last year to reflect it’s broader expansion. They are open every day from 10am-11pm and have 160 trained telephone LGBT volunteers who can advise on a vast myriad of issues, everything from coming out, relationship issues, family problems, safer sex, finding other LGBT+ support groups.

There is also an Instant Messaging platform on their discrete website. They provide a friendly, non-judgemental and strictly confidential service.  Christmas can often be a difficult and stressful period for people, which is why Switchboard is open throughout the festive period to take calls. They can be reached on the following number: 0300 330 0630.

They are also looking for help to ensure they can keep on providing this vital service. This can be in the form of donations and fund-raising, as they currently receive no statutory funding. Alternatively, you can apply to volunteer with them as a caller.
