GAY TRAVEL IN BERLIN

Posted on August 18, 2011

Liberal Berlin is known for its party-hard nightlife, distinctive architecture and warm welcome to all tourists. Gay Berlin on a budget is great fun when you know the nightlife to hit and where to sleep.
There are loads of things to do in Berlin for free, and the city is easy to navigate as you can always see TV tower in Alexanderplatz to guide you. You can also find fun, centrally located cheap Berlin hotels and hostel houses in wonderful architectural buildings.

 Where to sleep

Located in the notorious gay area of Schoneberg, Gay Hostel is at the heart of gay culture in Berlin. You’ll find it just south of Zoologischer Train Station, another fun and vibrant area within easy distance of the rest of Berlin. Berlin Gay Hostel is uniquely available to men-only and is one of HostelBookers.com’s top-rated hostels. They have single, double and dorm rooms complete with flat screen TVs and all mod cons, including social areas. Available from €22 pppn.

What to do

Around Schoneberg you’ll find Mann-O-Meter, Berlin’s main gay community centre. The Mann-O-Meter is one of the main driving forces behind Christopher Street Day – Berlin’s Gay Pride. It takes place every June and more than 450,000 people come to celebrate and parade through the city before ending in a massive street party that spills out onto the boats.

The rest of the year there’s the Gay Museum in Kreuzberg. It takes a look back at Berlin’s gay history, art and culture. Giving special attention to the thousands of gay men persecuted during the reign of the 3rd Reich.

Where to party

From the Mann-O-Meter, take a short walk down Motzstraβe and you’ll find all the area’s best gay bars, cafes, boutique shops and nightclubs. Make sure you visit Eldorado – back in the day it was a liberal dance hall, now it’s a notorious gay bar. Then check out Goya. The club’s impressive interior has been used for film locations and concert space, as well as one of the biggest club nights in town. Motzstraβe is also where you’ll find the Schwules Stadtfest, another gay street festival held the weekend before Christopher Street Day every year.

Where to shop

Make sure you check out the famous KaDeWe department store. It’s the second largest one in Europe, trumped only by Harrods in London. You’ll find fashion, accessories, a luxury boulevard, a beauty spa and enough food outlets to keep you going for a long time.

What to eat

Of course, no visit to Berlin is complete without sampling one of the tasty currywurst street vendors’ wares. You’ll find the hot pork sausage stalls in all the popular areas – an estimated 800 million are served in Germany each year. Yum.

And don’t miss out on the other main German delicacy, Sauerkraut. The sour cabbage has many health benefits, but most importantly it’s really delicious. Combine the two, wurst and sauerkraut with a dab of ketchup, and you’re in for a real treat.
