Idol Gossip – The Drag Idol news column

The heat stages of this year’s competition are now well underway, and isn’t the excitement just palpable? The correct answer to that is ‘yes’ by the way. There’s already been a shed-load of variety, glamour and high camp. Oh, and a generous sprinkling of drama too, on and OFF stage. Who’d have thought it? Drag queens and drama. Honestly, my sarcasm knows no bounds…

Anyway, let’s crack on, as I have a tanning booth with my name on it waiting. Admiral Duncan was the first of the London heats last week. A great atmosphere, an enthusiastic host in Son Of a Tutu, tipsy judges with plenty to say, and three very different acts made for a cracking night. It was The Bear Did Lady who took the win – a favourite with both the judges and audience. Later in the week, everyone flocked South of the river to witness the iconic RVT pop their Drag Idol cherry. And they went BIG! I shan’t prattle on about it though, there’s a full review on this week’s cabaret page. Other heats this week included The Two Brewers, won by Roxx, and Central Station, won by Alex Fear.

“Who’d have thought it? Drag queens and drama.”

Away from the hustle and bustle of London, Birmingham’s Eden Bar were the first out of the blocks this year, and have already held two heats, producing heat finalists Sum Ting Wong (LOVE that name) and Jade Justine.

The Palace, Bristol was where the main event of the week took place though. Their sole heat being hosted by 2008 finalist, Cherry Popppin, with a judging panel that included local favourite Miss Beaver. Cherry described the night to me as being like ‘The Hunger Games with hairspray’. Five acts battled it out and eventually it was Ruby Rawbone the judges chose.

She told me: “This is all super exciting. It’s such a new thing for me.” And her act? “I’d describe it as high-energy lip sync. I base a lot of it around physical comedy and just having a good time”.

All the best to Ruby in the Semi-Finals. Over and out drag addicts, ‘til next week.
