Myra DuBois: Self Admyra at London Wonderground

There’s something very London about Wonderground.

A space that would in any other city, be home to burnt out cars and sexually confused rats, has been converted into a shimmering mélange of cabaret performance, fairground rides and food stalls.

Fairy lights twinkle over throngs of bright-eyed young creatives and professionals who have finally got through the last season of Game Of Thrones and have decided to leave the house. Girls called Tabitha prop up the Pimms bar, a frosty glass of fruit and liquor in one hand, and Tinder open in the other. Sipping and flicking.

Myra DuBois will lend a much-needed sense of cynicism and sharp-eyed commentary to the proceedings. Someone needs to bring these arrogant urbanites down a peg or five. They’re all far too happy, basking in their self-assured liberalism and five figure graphic designer salaries.

Myra DuBois: Self Admyra is in the famous Spiegeltent, a 1920s Circus Tent Wonderground use for their biggest acts. No doubt Myra will have something to say about that. In this special one-off gig, she promises “an unapologetic hour of self-adoration”. She, apparently, aims to show everyone she’s just like us. Despite the fact that we don’t all constantly wear leopard-print and drink gin & tonic.

Myra is, genuinely, not only one of the best drag acts around at the moment, but one of the best comedy acts. She revels in the wry and ridiculous, but what makes her special is the knowing glint behind the eyes, and the tongue always firmly in cheek.

• Myra DuBois: Self Admyra is at The Spiegeltent, London Wonderground, Southbank Centre, SE1 8XX. Tuesday 19th July, 9:30pm. Tickets from £12.
