Ray Noir: Double Trouble

You may know Ray Noir as one of East Bloc’s distinctive club hosts, but he’s not just an eyelinered face, he also makes music. He speaks to QX about his new single ‘Double Trouble’, produced by Frankmusik.

Tell us a bit about yourself. Who is Ray Noir?

I grew up in the alternative scene in Oslo, Norway, with music being a huge part of my life since my teens. DJing and working closely with Norwegian and international bands led me to the idea of creating my own music and establishing myself as an artist. Industrial, synth, rock and metal have been my main areas of interest and this can be heard in my music.

How did you come up with the idea for Double Trouble?

I started by showing Frankmusik some songs for inspiration, tracks that I felt captured a similar atmosphere and genre as to what I was hoping to create. And so we started on the song ‘Double Trouble’, which used a catchy pop melody whilst using elements of the industrial sound.

What was the lyrical inspiration?

The whole party scene in London. And me being the catalyst of trouble within that scene.

How did you get involved with FrankMusik who produced the track?

We met through mutual friends, and got talking about my interest in working as an artist and being involved in the creativity of making my own music. With Frankmusik’s previous work being related to what I envisioned, yet mine being darker and more industrial, he was keen to try out something new and different with me.

And what’s next in your musical direction? Will you be performing ‘Double Trouble’ anywhere soon?

The single for ‘Double Trouble’ will be released this Autumn, with remixes from artists and DJs I have always admired. I will have my first concert performing ‘Double Trouble’ at Summer Rites Out on the Dock this Saturday.

• Summer Rites: Out on the Dock is on Saturday 26th August at the Tobacco Dock, 50 Porter’s Walk, E1W 2SF from midday – 11pm.
